In this hilarious episode of #SecretToSales, Chris Ripps, Salesforce Business Analyst at Airbnb, shares his story of at the age of 7, choosing to leave a skateboarding career behind for a life of sales ops.
"I love the look on people’s faces when everything works perfectly. The sales process is going well and then you just kill the deal."
[Topher] What’s the difference between sales and sales ops?
[Chris] Sales is like a cactus and Sales Ops is like the sun. Every time the sun shines on the cactus, you have growth. When the sun doesn’t shine you have no growth. So, you’re always trying to optimize growth, at any cost. So, you reserve the water for when you need it, but you’re always looking towards the next day and the next day after that.[Topher] Now when you were just starting out how did you tell your parents you wanted to do sales ops?
[Chris] I just said when I was 7 to my dad, I go, ‘I’m done with skateboarding, I don’t want to do ollies anymore. I want to integrate with large ELT systems.’
[Topher] What was his reaction to that?
[Chris] He said, ‘I don’t even know what ELT means. When you talk about that, it doesn’t even make any sense to me because that hasn’t even been invented yet.' But I said, ‘But it will.’
[Topher] What do you love most about sales ops?
[Chris] I love the look on people’s faces when everything works perfectly. The sales process is going well and then you just kill the deal.
[Topher] What advice would you give yourself if you were starting out today?
[Chris] Learn from others. Always ask questions. No matter what you think about the question, just always inquire.
[Topher] #SecretToSales You’re a good sir. Good sir!
