What are some questions you pose to recruiters to suss out a potential job?

Whenever a recruiter reaches out to me with something somewhat interesting, I immediately dig in with questions to evaluate whether it makes sense to keep talking. Below is one recent response. I'm curious what you think about it, what sorts of questions you ask, and why those are the questions?


"Looks interesting - is this a new role or has there been a team in place?  How long are median sales cycles?  What's the budgeted base+OTE?  And a weird one, but... what sales systems do they use besides CRM?  Anything like Outreach, Gong, Drift etc?"

First off, this is a great question Jason McKenzie ! I don't normally ask these sort of questions to the recruiter. I've found they often don't know or won't give me straight forward answers.

Yeah, I don't normally expect a good answer, but I like to ask them anyway, to see how engaged and connected they really are to the opp.  It also helps weed out the serial list-builders.  I agree that testing with the hiring manager and some current employees is far more valuable, but I also like to set the expectation with the recruiter upfront th...See more

One of the first questions I ask the recruiter upfront that helps, is how long have you been working with this employer, and how many people have you placed with them.
