My biggest regret..

I was interviewed on a podcast recently and was asked about mistakes or regrets I had. Jokingly, I didn't have enough time for me to go through them all - and yet it did bring me to my biggest regret -

At my first real sales position where I was learning to sell technology products and services, in my early 20's, as a young single mom - the company got acquired. That in itself is a story since our office attempted to unionize (more later).

The company that bought us was based in the Bay Area (CA) and we were in Seattle.

All of the sales reps and managers were told we had to spend a MONTH at training in CA. I went along with everyone and left my son with others for a MONTH. (Company sold off our division one year later and I moved on.)

I didn't think I had the ability to stick up for being a single parent and basically "farmed" my son out to family and friends a week at a time for 4 weeks total. Didn't ask to be flown home on the weekends (?). That training mandate would be unheard of today - but years ago, that happened. If you don't have kids, and have reps who do - try to put yourself in their shoes when expecting quick turn around times or late hours, or last minute meetings.

I should have been honest with everyone to show other women it was OK to be a mother and a woman in sales. In fact be...

Yea, the things we learn as we go along. I like to think we did the very best we could do at that moment. Thanks for sharing, Maria!

What a great lesson to share Lori - we need to speak up for what works for us and our families.
