1:1s turning into a pitch on why I should stay at the company.

My company is bleeding talent and I am looking as well...just taking my time.  I'm engaging with one company at a time and being picky about comp packages/digging pretty hard for red flags.  Meanwhile I've maintained top of the leaderboard status at my current gig so I'm not forced into a PIP situation where I NEED the new gig.

My manager must have a sixth sense something is up because the last two 1:1s have turned into him talking about how lots of reps have left and he wouldn't blame me for looking too.  Then it turns into a someone needy/desperate pitch on why I should stay at the company.  It's exhausting to sit there for a full hour and not let slip I'm interviewing externally plus the way he talks about how a job is about more than money is really grinding my gears.  WHY DO WE WORK IF NOT TO MAKE MONEY.  Anyway...tips for not slipping up?

“Respectfully, I’m still here and I’d like to keep our 1:1s focused on how I maintain my spot at the top and continue making the money I need to make. I could use your help with these deals and here’s how I’d propose we work through them.”

Love it. Turn the focus back on the deals and pipe gen activity.

100% this. If you're feeling cheeky you could even through in "did you say these kinds of things to the people that left?". But then you risk getting a negative reaction.

Supposed to be 30 min…they just tend to drag over a lot of the time.

lmao. I would never. Our 1:1s were always 30 minutes and then our new manager does 45 and I fucking hate it. Then he always ends them short anyways.

Thank you for the transparency with company current affairs. Now back to my one on one and my business plan moving forward...

It’s not a sixth sense when it’s obvious everyone is looking and if your top of the leaderboard they can’t afford to lose you. Next time he brings it up, say, “I’m happy here and want to stay a top the leaderboard but what are you guys going to do to ensure I stay, ie… more money or more stock etc.” put it back on them. They don’t give 1 fuck about you, they care about the money you make them and ironically “a job isn’t all about money” is a bullshit line. Fuck em

Hit him with something that appears logical then change the subject. "Why would I want to leave? I'm consistently the top performer and the money is good. Why would I give that up?"

Then go with what @sfsalesdude said.

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
My last company has bled like 80% of sales people in the last 12 months.  When I left in Jan. HR treated me like a pariah instead of understanding why I'm leaving.  They don't want to face certain realities and your mngr would probably bet his salary on the fact you're job searching....

And he's probably looking too.

Tips - just stick to a script about the accounts you're working.  Also, put in a "hard stop" - you have a customer call you need to get to at a certain time so he doesn't ramble on.

Oof I just told my mgr I wanted to skip our 1:1 this week because I closed a huge deal and got a verbal on another huge deal and could use the extra time getting all of that organized. Can’t imagine having to sit there for a whole hour talking about nonsense! First thing I’d do is try and get that switched to a 30 min mtg 😅

Sounds like it's time to get a bump in base salary if he's this concerned about you leaving. If he's not going to help you make more commission during your 1:1's you might as well take that momentum and put it to good use.
