1 year down

Hey Savages,

I'm 1 year down as an Enterprise SDR Manager at my company in tech (we're a series C). My boss took a shot on me as I was a team lead for less than 2 quarters at a different company and ours was just starting to build out their outbound function. I didn't do a good job negotiating OTE -> 90k base 45k variable. Long story short the experiment worked and my team is motivated and has been very successful (obviously there were bumps in the road, hard lessons, etc). My boss agrees that they are underpaying me and she would be able to get me an increase. My company prides itself on being 75th percentile on market comp. it's been really difficult for me to find market comp for sdr/bdr leadership positions. Anyone have any advice on where to look? I love where I work but I've also toyed with the idea of just going and getting a job offer somewhere else to make them match it which I know they would. (I've already hopped on Payscale, Glassdoor, the bravado one, and Comparably.) any advice or recs would be awesome!

Ok. Here's what you do:

Throw in a very high anchor number while negotiating, like a 150k Base. And see what happens.

$90k base for a SDR role is pretty high IMO, or even a SDR mngr.

With a potential looming recession, Iโ€™d be feeling pretty fortunate.

Honestly, you did a fine job negotiating. $90K base as an SDR is very high. Congratulations!

Now, if they would like to give you more, by all means, see what you can get, based on your merit.

My SDRs make 70k base 35k variable for context and I was up until last week managing 16 SDRs so my hands were definitely full. Thatโ€™s part of the reason this conversation is happening. We performed well when I was overloaded. Thankfully we just hired another manager to make it sustainable so Iโ€™m back to 10 but it was a grind for a while there.

look at RepVue and see what they have to say about comp.

I HATE the idea that you would have to go get a written offer to get your current company to give you a raise. (i know other companies do this and it sucks)

Sounds like you have a good relationship with your boss.

I would not be surprised if you are in good shape as far as comp nationally though....

if you are doing well, enjoying it and earning that level in a SRD position then id stay put, as long as you are delivering at least 4 times your base in value (profit not revenue). Anything less, id be careful.

Iโ€™d probably focus on prioritizing one or the other of base or variable because both seem pretty competitive. Either try to get a significant bump on base and minor bump in variable โ€œMy day to day has been increasingly hectic with more responsibility and i think my base should be reflective of thatโ€ or if you love how your teams performance has been trending say โ€œIโ€™m driving growth and performance among my team to new highs and want to share in the increased performanceโ€ and ask for a minor bump in base but significantly more variable.

RepVue is in the process of putting the data together for roles like SDR/BDR Manager roles, but from what Iโ€™ve been told, and seen - look at what a general base for the Mid-Market / Ent. AE is and up it about 20-30% for base context. Since youโ€™re not closing deals and only making variables, your base should be higher.

Ex: ENTAE base = $100k then SDR Manager should = ~ $120k-$130k base.

All based on your initial 75th percentile position.

Congrats on your success! Must feel good.

I'd say RepVue as well, not a fan of getting another offer - it's a waste of everyone's time.

90K for SDR pay is pretty good unless the COL where your located is outrageous. Looking at you SF, Seattle, LA, and Denver.
