1st Week at a new AE job

Hi Sales Sharks,

Hope all of you had a great quarter as usual

I just started completed my first week as an AE in my new company, I want to share my actions and hopefully get some advice/pointers. This company is an IT service provider.

On my first day, I emailed my Direct manager and he introduce me to all the stakeholders. I reach out to all of them individually and ask for an introduction session. Had a meeting with Sales ops for the necessary onboarding process.

Day 2 - Virtual meet leaders from presales, project delivery, various tech practice owners. Got to know the company's real offerings and resource focus. Meet my MD for a beer in the evening to have an understanding of the expectation and hiring me. I ask to shadow a salesperson to have a better understanding of the process and our offerings, he immediately sends out an email instructing a Sales director to bring me to all meetings and demo for the next 3 mths.

Day 3 - After gathering all the information and understanding of our business focus and strategy, I work out a plan to quickly kick start my journey. I focus on 1 product that we are uniquely strong in and have strong use cases. I bug/ research/ ask for resources to study and understand the product.

Day 4 and 5 are spent on Elearning and researching the product, the marketing, alternatives, and competitors. Strategize my game plan for Oct.

Please offer your valuable suggestions or share your thoughts. If possible, pls comment on what I should have achieve by end of week 2

Thanks

Don't you have a set oboarding process? How many sales people in the org? Rather than doing your stuffs, did you try to speak to sales reps about what steps they followed and how time they took to cope up? This is help you to design your own plan knowing about the former and what improvement have been in the org since then.

Really depends, there won't be a straight opinion unless you supplement more info.

My honest opinion on the onboarding process - it sux. The HR manager did not do anything to ensure I got everything. I got my email ID late, I got my boss's contact through LinkedIn ( which I reach out to him). I don't have my corp laptop with me.ย

Our HQ is in Singapore, we have a sales team of less than 10 in the SEA region. I have a sales director guiding me for the first few mths which is requested from me to the MD.ย

That's pretty much sucks.. I had been in the same spot in the past but what worked for me was to understand about the sales cycle and when would they expect me to start hitting my numbers. This helped me to create my own roadmap - e.g. week 1 - X, week 2 - Y, than Inwould break those into day wise. I feel you should master yourself into products and the same time listen to some good/bad calls so yout understand your do's and don'ts and start building your script.

Yea, after meeting with delivery and solutioning team... I figured out what's the best product to focus on judging from our credentials. I have done my first lvl of research and understanding, will deep dive even deeper to gear up myself before I jump into the trenches. I have request to involve me in all demos and calls related to the product.ย

How large of a company is this? It sounds like a fairly unstructured onboarding process. Hard to tell how much Iโ€™m inferring though

The company is small, globally less than 200. We focus mainly on the SEA region. We grow from 30 to 200 in the last 3 years.ย
