Your SE does, and he wants you to know you're talking about features all wrong.

Sales Ops does, and they KNOW you screwed up the quote.

Services does, and they want you to know we've never been able to do what you just guaranteed we can do.

When I worked in recruitment I honestly had little to no clue about the whole industry, I just got the buzzwords I needed, the general responsibilities of the job and away we go

*I worked in embedded software and hardware engineering btwย

That's okay as that's how I generally feel about 90% of recruiters I talk to.

Blow it up
Sales is about relationship building, not quoting specs and performance. We have engineers to back us up, but if they were as people-focused as us then the company wouldn't need a separate sales team.

I routinely outsold competitor reps with Masters or PhDs because I could actually connect with our customers, show the value of our products in various situations and didn't drown them in technobabble.

You should know the basics of your product's specs and definitely be an expert in using it to prevent overpromising or looking like a fool on a demo, but you don't have to be able to build it from scratch.

I don't need to know the technical aspects that's why I have engineers, I need to be proficient enough to get them to the point of wanting to have the call with the Sales engineer.ย

I've seen so many reps have a basic, high level understanding, then bring in a tech to answer the detailed questions

It happens more than you think, sometimes the CEO doesn't even know where the company is going, red flags for sure!

Ive been there as well, but whenever that happens I try to educate myself of the subject and ask around. I hate being lost, and often, when you are some of the few who knows whatโ€™s going up, you will raise with the company!

Every day is a learning day, to be honest I took the job knowing I would not fully understand the product but i guess that is why we have an engineering team rightย

I think there's a balance. You should be able to talk to most of the points to at least some degree but you aren't going to know everything.ย

It took me almost a year to fully understand my product! My advice is to find an SE that you can build a relationship and have them mentor you through every step and reason behind functions. This will help your demos 10x.ย
