90% of the sales team is male

I'm the only woman and salesperson on the team who's never been to trade show/ conference and we all have similar roles and experience and tenure (1-2 yrs).

do you think something like being the only woman would make them not want to let me travel since I'd be an "extra expense" since I'd need my own hotel room?

and yes I'm sales not marketing ๐Ÿคช

some more context:

it's a 1-to-1 AE to SDR role so normally it seems the SDR , AE, and a few product specialist go to conferences/shows- we are pretty tradeshow-focused since it's a niche community

If you work for a company where employees share rooms when they go to a conference - please look for a different company.ย

@LordBusiness my thoughts exactly upon reading this. Sexism exists, yes this is a fact. But also โ€œwtf they share hotel rooms as grown ass men (and women) at OPs company?โ€

I worked for one company that required this and it blew my fucking mind. I was not there long.

Lol, this is not that uncommon. I shared a room as far up as director level.

The travel secretary asked me if I wanted my own, but 4/5 reps were sharing, and the 5th would only get their own if I didโ€ฆ so I showed some solidarity.

10 years in sales, never once had to share a room. Not even as a 22 YO BDR. That is wack.

Iโ€™ve shared at trade shows and client meetings.

BDR, AE, SM, RSM, Director levels. Maybe I just worked for cheap companies. Idk man, I wasnโ€™t there for the hotel room I was there to get paid.

Chances are they would include you if you asked. Research shows that men typically get raises more often over women because they are more likely to ask for a rase.

You're in sales so you should never be afraid to ask. Wait until you have done so and received an answer before drawing conclusions.ย

I think if you would ask your manager if they don't take you because you're a girl, they'd probably be shaking in their manly boots because most companies put on the facade of equality on their manifests. go get em

If you want to go. Just ask them.
I understand where you are coming from. But you are making assumptions. โ€œSince Iโ€™d need my own hotel roomโ€
Never expect handouts. If you want something. Make it clear or ask for it.

Good question here. I never shared a room in SaaS sales even as a guy.
You should definitely go. Just ask.

As all mentioned, you get what you ask. If they don't want to include you, ask them their reasoning behind the perception.ย

My red flag meter is on the edge of "what the fuck" and "get out now".

Are they making reps share hotel rooms...?

I get it. I'm travelling and staying in a hotel for the first time this weekend. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a lil nervous.ย

I've been in sales for a very long time, and I've always been in the minority that way.ย  ย Many enterprise companies are deliberately trying to balance the workforce, but it's a slow process for sure.

In your case, it sounds like you're not included in a trade show or conference and you want to be, so if I were you, I'd ask to be included.ย  I wouldn't assume it's because of the cost of a hotel room, and I also personally wouldn't accept that from them as a reason either.ย  ย  I'd tell my manager I want to attend, and see what he/she says about it.ย  ย If s/he tells you they're full for this one, let him/her know you look forward to going to the next one.

I think they would include you no problem for multiple reasons.ย

1.) shows diversity at the tradeshow

2.) gives a completely different point of view usually and allows you to interact with accounts in a higher touchpointย

3.) Highly likely that the tradeshow depending on your vertical is male and female attended therefore means you have a higher likelihood of being able to allow the females attending to feel open to speaking with you.

It's 2021 and I hope you do not feel excluded for gender.

Blow it up
Depending on the industry/culture it might be a bit of the "old boys club" using the trips as a company-funded bro trip.

TBH I think it is a dumb move not to bring you. As the only female rep from the company you'll probably have twice the engagement. Is that right? No, but that doesn't mean you can't use it to your advantage.

Iโ€™m really noticing this at my org. The make to female ratio is super dude skewed. Curious if anyone knows why this is. Just like, countless years of male dominance and misogyny on the decline that still has some work to do or something like that?

I'd ask first. Sometimes people have their assumptions and maybe they think you don't want to go? Once confirmed, then you can run far away if necessary?
