A cool cold calling experience

Have you ever cold called somebody you ended up knowing, or had some sort of actual connection to? I'd love to hear the story below! I just got off the phone with a prospect who remembered seeing me play high school football. After my introductory bit...

Me: Hey Jim, I noticed your ___ area code. You don't have to tell me where you're from, but I'm from ___. Do you know the place?

Jim: Well yeah! I'm from ___!

Me: Oh cool! I went to school at ___. Maybe you were up working in Michigan at the time whenever I was still in school.

Jim: No, I was back home working then. Did you know [head football coach]?

Me: Oh yes I knew Coach ___... he was rough but effective! We won a lot with him.

Jim: Well he's my best friend, actually. I remember about that time he was really excited about these two 'public school boys' coming in to play defense for him. You weren't one of them were you? What's your last name, JDialz?

Me: Probably so! Last name is ___.

Jim: WOW! I'm pretty positive I saw you play!

It ain't much, but I thought it was very cool. I've also called on somebody who was in college marching band with my dad. It's a SMALL WORLD y'all!

In the reverse. I needed some help from my insurance carrier years ago. My last name is beyond unique. Toward the end of the call, the rep asked if I minded a slightly personal question. I told him I didn't. He asked if I knew someone with my same last name, because he'd gone to school with him. Of course it was my brother.

And that is also why I have to do my best to remain totally, well, awesome. It's a freaking small world and my name is not shared by anybody.

Yes! I dated a girl (she was smoking hot on gaw) for a weekend in high school. I was at her house Sunday night and her friend was messaging another dude on chat (I’m old) and I knew it wasn’t my best friend (who was her boyfriend). Their chat was hot and heavy too, it wasn’t good.
So I told my buddy and he confronted his girlfriend. Well my girlfriend hated I did that and dumped me. It really hurt. I was never popular or attractive and this girl was amazing. I had never had a girlfriend that was even average and this girl was a 10. It really hurt.
Flash forward to my sophomore year of college and my brother and I decide to swing into wendys to get a late night snack in my hometown. We were home for the summer. Roll up to the register, guess who’s working the till and is in training. The girl who dumped me.
I’ve never actually seen someone die in their own skin before but I saw it then. She wanted to not exist and tried to vanish by the look in her eyes. I asked her how it was going and she said good. I ordered two JBC’s and a blue Powerade. She took my money and gave me my food. I said it was good seeing her and we went and ate.
That was it. I’m cold blooded and it felt good.

My team makes a lot of calls, and for the most part most its a pretty straight up 80/20 rule. 10% folks are the easiest meetings ever, 10% are terrible humans.
