A delicate dance

Hey fam,

I'm kicking off conversations internally to try to move up in the org into a newly created role while at the same time picking up conversations elsewhere.

I feel a sense of impending collision course. Has anybody successfully pulled off the timing on this without running out of track in either area while discussions were still going on on the other? If so, tell me what you did!

This has happened to me before, and I ended up leaving because the internal lift was too heavy for leadership to get out of their own way.

If you want to stay at your current spot then it's important to set expectations. Will it be uncomfortable, possible, but if you don't tell them that you are either going to take this new role internally or have to look elsewhere then they will have no reason to push things along.

It’s important to balance being eager without coming across as backstabbing or insincere. As long as your truthful with everyone you deal with and express clearly what your goals are, you’ll be fine. If your manager is a blocker, find an internal champion who can be a mentor, and kind of block for you and/or be a sounding board.

Wanting to advance and being eager to advance aren’t negatives. Ambition is better than stagnation and being content.

Market is so hot i dont see internal creating a new position in time to get an outside offer. If somethign good comes take it but keep the door open. Or let them know i am looking outside too so lets get this done, but this could really backfire (trust me lol)
