A sales influencer who is AGAINST a "personal brand"? Finally!

so we have all beat the whole "is a personal brand a good idea" thing to death,

BUT a sales leader/ influencer I really enjoy is Becc Holland. She recently posted a video of her and Keenan (and some other guy) talking about is building a personal brand is worth it.

Becc states that she has not seen a SINGLE #1 contributor have a "personal Brand" and even goes as far as saying she thinks its a bad idea.

i think this is a HOT TAKE coming from her.

check out the video its 9 minutes long but i liked it.

right? she goes on to say that the "brand" she built wasnt something she did like on pupose, just her helping out alot of SDRs spread and she was able to do cool things. which....is kinda the brand but what ever haha

Haven't watched the video yet, but...

There are only so many hours in a day. If you spend a lot of those hours working on "your personal brand" and not "selling" or "doing your job", something's going to suffer.

This for sure. Although as long as you're doing a good job at your job, your personal brand can help you get your next job more than doing an excellent job will.

My personal brand is my good name and my integrity - basically, my reputation. Other than that, who has the time?

And...let's put it this way. I've not had a single recruiter ever tell me that my LI posts or "brand" was what got their attention. It was/is the resume.

this i completely agree with.

haha this is true! recruiters will probably not say that. they will probably say "you have excellent work history that aligns with this opportunity"

TLDR:
keenan and Becc agree that if you are trying to build a brand as an AE or SDR to get meetings, that is wrong.

Keenan believes a brand is good and opens doors and provides more opportunity.

Becc believes there are many risks of building a brand like, if something bad happens, you fail in public, also sometimes these folks cant actually deliver at a high level.

they argue about Becc's brand and they all agree to disagree in the end haha.

It greatly depends upon your business. I do not know who she is, however, I do know Keenan.

Is being a "Sales Professional & Sales Leader" a personal brand? I think it is. People who know me that that is the case. Do I need to be more? No. Want to? Not really (not worth the effort).

The real question isn't how do you develop a personal brand, but how do you monetize it? If YouTube and Insta didn't pay per click, how would "influencers" monetize?

yeah i totally agree. having a "fans" is one thing, but having a following that will help you earn is another.

thats why dudes like justin welsh have done so well since he has created a following and been able to monetize that through selling online courses and products.

I guess they should start by defining what it means to build a brand. If Becc means that youโ€™re BDR and spend all day posted on LinkedIn, so you donโ€™t have time to reach out to any prospects, then yeah I would agree with her youโ€™re probably not going to make quota.

But if they mean youโ€™re an AE and you spend a portion of your day sharing valuable content targeted to your ICPs on LinkedIn and other places, then I would have to disagree with Becc.

yep i think im right inline with you.

Also even if posting on linked in doesnt bring you any deals, i think its still valuable, it can grow your network, lead to new relationships and job opportunities. (as long as you are actually good at the job haha)
