A VP Went to Club…

...And his whole team stayed home.

Sound familiar?

The SaaS company I sell for (fairly prominent) recently held our annual President's Club trip.

The region I've been in for a couple of years is organized by two teams, two directors, and a VP. The region overall hit quota last year. I did not nor did anyone not being ramped.

We all ate and did pretty well but only the VP and I believe one rep went on the trip.

At first glance it legitimately seems like quotas are built unfairly. Thoughts? How common is this?

While they're gone, form a coup d'état. Usurp them.

I have never been attracted to these kind of trips or felt compelled to want to attend. It's still work.

I'm confused, isn't a VP measured by the attainment of their team?

Pretty routine for extra quota passdowns - VP adds 20% to his managers and they add 20% to their reps

Yeah, ramp always messes with reps. It was me and the CRO hitting our numbers last year. It looks like me, a junior AE, and possibly one other hitting depending if deals close or not.

Blow it up
I don't know about the rest of ya'll but I'm not too keen on these kinds of trips.

Maybe I just traveled enough in previous jobs that I don't see it as a reward unless my family is there and I'm not obligated to spend time with coworkers.

At the large company I was formerly at, who went was also political and often arbitrary.    It wasn't a case of "attain 135% of quota and you go", it was hit or miss.  It was more discouraging, tbh, as the deck was clearly stacked.

However, if you were a rep who blew out your quota and didn't go...you had the commission money to go and take your family on a really super vacation, and could spend that time with people you really like.  :)

I think Club is one of those things that we could stop doing but it’s also one of those cliche things that will never die.

Sure. Agreed. It’s not as much about going/not going to club but the VP hitting and going and literally only 2 of 20 reps.

In some companies, leadership automatically goes - perk of mngt.  So dunno if its fair or not.
PC to me has always been a mngt boondoggle.  Most companies arent doing away with it too.  I wouldn't think too much on it.

wait im confused.....did no one go besides the VP?

Or did one rep hit goal as well?

Did no one hit quota?

Or did reps on a ramp up quota hit those numbers?

The overall concept that a leader could go to club even if zero of their people make it, does seem odd, but do you know what their metrics are?

The VP and one rep went. No one hit quota outside of them.

yeah the optics are bad on that, another sign that quotas are too high.the are obviously beig judged on a number lower than combined quota for the team which raises some questions

Right. I think my VP inflated our quotas far above what they needed to be compared to the actual plan

I worked for a staffing company where all managers and above automatically qualified for the trip. Was weird when everyone was doing horrible then they go on a trip
