Ableism in sales?

Y'aaaaall. My boss just sent me a job posting for any comments/edits, and this language is bullshit. And I'm assuming this goes on every job posting at the company. Since when is CLIMBING involved in closing deals?? Do colorblind people have no capacity to close deals???

"Occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must frequently lift and/or move up to ten (10) pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus."

Pissed in general about this. And I'm assuming HR came up with this language so...cool.

I see "lift/move 10 pounds" on job postings on multiple sites, but like...can we not? I work from home, I've always worked from home, I could have no legs and still do my job.

Mostly just want to vent, but if anyone has experience pushing HR on job posting templates, I'd love to hear it.

It's common to lift a certain amount of weight for pharmaceutical/medical sales jobs. But this is a first for me.

I have never had a desk job that hasn't involved rigorous amounts of climbing. Very valid qualification for any 9-5.

I mean, when I was a recruiter I definitely felt my soul climb up and out of my body multiple times a day.

I guess this is true. Mine dipped in June when half my workforce fell off and it has yet to return.

I don't think we've ever actually discussed what type of recruiting you did. Industry? Agency/in-house?

Agency, a few different industries but a lot of manufacturing/construction/entry and mid level white collar.

Ooooo that's the fun shit right there. I bet you had hella hooligans all up in there. I currently do healthcare recruiting/biz dev at a startup agency and used to do IT recruiting at one of the big-time shitty IT agencies.

Oh big time fun, the people I encountered were next level wild... I have more than my fair share of stories ranging from hilarious to downright horrifying.

Sounds like it's just a template they use for every position in the company because HR is too lazy to give it some thought as to whether those requirements even make sense for any given position.

Which doesn't make me feel good about working for that company. They can't take the time to customize a job posting? What else do they ignore?

Yeahhhh I’ve been actively applying to jobs since my manager quit in March. But also I might be promoted to manager this month? Idk, that’s probably a separate post entirely.

And this is why they have trouble hiring/finding the right people. Starts with the job description and respsonibilities involved. Just like setting proper expectations with a prospect. If I read a job description with all of those “abilities” i wouod assume it was for stockboy at Grocery store or something along those lines.

Did they say why they included it? It may just be a mistake

I sent edits and asked if this was a real requirement, so we’ll see…but I think it’s copy/paste on all postings.

My first sales job was at a car dealership and we would have these insane dodgeball fights in the showroom, so there was plenty of climbing, running, jumping, and diving involved!

that doesn't sound read like a sales job though, or are you guys required to climb and move stuff?

It's on a sales job posting, but I've never had to climb something other than the corporate ladder.

You mentioned it's probably pasted onto every posting regardless of position. I'd ask HR about it and see what their excuse is.

During my interview, I was asked if I had any conditions that might keep me from working. At first, I wanted to go off, but then I remembered the many times having to substitute one specific teacher that seemed to be sick every week, and how much trouble it caused.

Ableism doesn't have a place in the workplace, but I can see where being chronically sick and needing someone to cover you all the time would piss people off. It's difficult to know where to draw the line.

Ask to be involved in the hiring process for your new manager. If you are going to stay there of course. Worked very well for me a few years ago.
