Accept the offer or pass?

Currently SMB AE in the fintech space. $50k base, $75k OTE. Been here 5 months, joined after a layoff at my last position, where I was an AE at a startup selling into MM and some Enterprise $75k base, $150k OTE. I've been interviewing the whole time I've worked my current job, just haven't gotten any offers.

Until now. Just got an offer for an Account Development position (ADR) at a tax automation software company. $52k base, $88k OTE. Not very excited about the product, but it seems like a stable company and slightly higher pay. I'd still probably keep interviewing even if I accept the offer.

It's Mid-Market, so I'd be back where I was before in a way. Current company doesn't even sell to companies with more than 5-10 employees (and even then, that would be considered a "big" deal). So my future here is limited. At least with the ADR position, there's a chance to move up into a closing role at some point. I'm leaning towards passing on the offer. It doesn't seem smart to make this move for a few more dollars and a step backwards in title. Just looking for some perspective I guess or any thoughts anyone here has.

I would pass this, I would instead put all my energy towards finding a new job. Once you accept you know the amount of time/dedication/focus you have to put in the new role.

You're going backwards in OTE and title...

Dont do it.

I'm going forward in OTE (current OTE is $75k, offer is for $88k). Also the base goes up $2k.

That's peanuts. Not worth leaving to a company you're not thrilled about to get demoted and get an extra $160 per month.

I'm not thrilled about my current company either to be honest. I'm leaning towards your position. I think the only hesitation I have is whether this is a better option long term vs my current job. I can't just assume my efforts to find a better job will actually pan out.

Of course they'll pan out - you've been there before. It's not that big of a bump in OTE from your current position, so you'd move over, start again, while still looking. Not sure I'd do that myself.

You've got this, this is just the first of the offers. I'm optimistic on your behalf that better offers are on the horizon.

Stop sending resumes and start cold calling the people that are leading the teams of the jobs you are applying to.

Cold call the VP sales.
Cold call the Sales Manager.
Ask the sales people to connect with you and share their experience. Ask for a recommendation.

Send a resume here and there if you feel like it.

6 months and low results. Time to stop the insanity and change it up.

Yeah that's what I've been doing. Not for every job, but for the ones I really want.

Unfortunately, I don't really have a strong ICP for myself. Which has made proactive prospecting more difficult than it should be.

Stay where you are but keep searching. You will find something better if you're patient.

Just don't let yourself start slacking in your current role because you're mentally on the way out. Keep making a difference for them and who knows what might happen there.

Yeah, this doesn't seem like a big enough bump in salary to have to do another onboarding, etc. Wait until you get a bigger fish here.

Bro I'm an newer SDR and I'll hit my OTE which is is 80k. I just went thru a huge job hunt grind but it was worth it. I feel like if you have the ability to spend some time job hunting you can find some much better offers.

You can do better. This role is only marginally better in pay, and if you already see yourself actively seeking new opportunities before you even start it isn't worth your time.

So you'll go from AE to SDR? Pass that like a pinto on the autobahn.

Its ADR. Similar to SDR but at this org apparently you go BDR>SDR>ADR>AE or AM. So it's like an intermediate step between SDR and AE. But yeah, it's definitely a step down.

I've seen ADRs before and they are doing a lot of the AE work but getting none of the credit or cash. Good to pass.

Punt, pass and kick. Why? Read your post back.
Paragraph 1: Situation - 4 lines
Paragraph 2: Explanation - 4 lines
Paragraph 3: Justification - 7 lines
If you've got to work nearly twice as hard to justify it as you do to explain it, it's the wrong move.

Also: "I'd still probably keep interviewing even if I accept the offer." Nope

Don’t know about you but I need to be excited about what I do. You’re very transparent in front of the client so if you’re not excited about it, how can you expect your client to be?
Look for something better, set goals for what you want, work towards it and be patient.

How is your performance at the current company? if things are going well I wouldnt take this new role, too much risk switch roles with not as much of an added benefit with base

I'm middle of the pack. Met quota in March, 33% for April. On pace for ~110% for May (with enough pipe backing it up). I'm not worried about being fired or anything. I'm just worried that the longer I stay here the more I'm just wasting my time. Like, what exactly is this role helping prepare me for? Not very much, as far as I can tell.

as a hiring manager, I can tell you that before I read a resume, I look at the tenure per job over the last 5-10 years. leaving after 6 months can be explained away, but leaving for a job that only gives incrementally more financial security will lead to your continuing to look. that would mean as a hiring manager, you have no loyalty, only get through the potential Draw phase of a new sales job, and focus your energy on your next job not your current.
the decisions you make will impact your future.

Theoretically, this job would also have more growth potential. I could work my way up to a closing role with bigger deal sizes than I'm working on now. Whereas at my current job I'm going to be stuck working with micro businesses for 2-3 years or more. I'm kind of screwed no matter what I guess.

if you want to take the offer the truly focus on working the job and advancing, it will not have negative effect on your career. You did mention that even it you took the job, you would still plan on continuing to interview.
do not make a short term move that forces to explain that away for years to come. either stay where you are until you find what you are looking for, and kickass along the way. or take the new job and put 100% of your energy there. make it work, suck it up, and grind it out for 2 years or more.
it is the in-between that will cause you years of grief.

Yeah. I think the only reason to turn the offer down is that I still have some hope that I can find something more in line with my expectations. Everyday that goes by though I tend to think I'm being delusional, and that I need to stop fighting the tide and instead let it take me.
