Accepted a new position, now my current company is offering me a promotion.

Title says it all. I've been BDR for the past 9 months now and have been extremely successful in that role. With the job market the way it is, I was offered an AE position with a new company and the territory being my current hometown and a couple towns over as well. With that comes a much higher base, OTE, etc.

Now that my current company knows I'm leaving, they're working on ways to promote me into a new role and offering me other opportunities to stay, which is something they never discussed with me in my 9 months here. There's a 0% chance I stay where I'm at, but had to tell someone, would also welcome some WR opinions as well!

Never accept a counter offer. The only reason they are doing that is unplanned headcount is harder to deal with than planned. Most of the people that accept counters still end up leaving/getting pushed out a few months later.

Agreed 100%. A good chunk of our team, including the top performers are all leaving/have left, so it's not really a good look for the big boss at the moment.

The counter offer is always reactionary. If you accept it, it'll look like you took your promotion to leverage your ass outta there. In the episode of Branch Closing from The Office we see how this actually plays out in real life the majority of the time that's how people will see it.

Yeah, it's extremely hard to come back and have things work out. However, don't burn any bridges! People move around org to org a lot so you don't want to develop a bad reputation. They'll try to spread some FUD on your way out about making the jump to AE so be ready for that as well.

I did get a great recommendation from my boss, so that's always a good thing to have. We're leaving it as something I can always come back to later on in life if things don't go as planned.

Since everyone else already touched on the bullshit behind counter offers I won't beat that dead horse. Personally if I was offered the opportunity to target the area I grew up in AND it paid a much higher base it would be a no brainer.

Yeah, counters are bull shit - but congrats to you - gotta feel good to have a few different companies fawning over your services. Don't burn the bridge with your current company though, never know what the other side of the rainbow has to offer until you arrive there.

Counter offers are dangerous. It shows that they know you’re worth more than they paid you, but they waited until they were going to lose you to bring it up. Unless you’re at a small family business and love what you do, or have a lot of perks that the new job doesn’t have, take the new offer.

Also, someone recently told me folks who accept counter offers still leave within 9 months. They're basically buying themselves time to replace you.

Ask for coaching along the way, i.e. text the hiring manager for your first interview and say "I'm really looking forward to starting the process, I'm coming prepared with XYZ for the interview, anything else that would help me be successful on the call?"

Late to this but this comes up time and time again and I have two opinions on it.

Firstly, I'd like to think if I owned the company or if not had the authority to sign off on the budget, I would give people pay rises and promotions when I think is best suited, not just when they want to leave. I have promoted people before because they are genuinely good, but they have never been huge pay rises, they were just unexpected promotions and a little bump in pay due to recognition and what finance would sign off on annoyingly. I'd like to think I would look into the market, then look at someone's performance and go oh actually yes they are great let's give them that.

Secondly, the advice I was always given is that when you tell your current company you are leaving and they ask why, you of course say things like 'Can't miss the opportunity, better pay etc'. When they tell you they will counter offer...tell them that you don't want to see the counter offer. You made the decision to move and there has to be a reason why. If you see the counter offer you get tempted to stay but then sooner or later you'll want to leave again due to the original reasons.
