Accepted an offer but now another one has come in

I accepted an offer for a great company, but now my dream company is offering me a chance to interview with them.


Do I tell them that I already accepted an offer but I'm willing to reconsider for them, my dream company. Or do I keep it on the DL?

Personally, keep it on the DL and go through the interview with the dream company. Great company, no offense, will hire someone else within a week. Hell, at my company I know well enough that I'd get replaced the week after I died/quit/retired/went to prison. Go for your dreams, friend.

Agreed. An interview won't hurt and frankly, you need to think of yourself first. Lord knows a company will be acting in their best interests when they're considering laying someone off or letting them go. It isn't ideal to have to rescind your acceptance of an offer, but timing isn't always perfect.

Agreed. Similar thing happened to me. Had an offer in hand, and an interview with SFDC, who I thought was the pinnacle of SaaS sales... turns out they weren't as open to my entrepreneurial genes as the company I had the offer from... Glad I learned that I DON'T need to go chasing a "Dream" opportunity. 

Grass is Greener where you water it. Find out where best fits you. Never apologize for interviewing... Its a key skill to stay sharp on.

Accept the offer but do the interview regardless. If it turns out to be better just quit your (very) new job and start at your dream company. This sounds aweful and if I was the hiring manager at great company I’d probably hate you. But on the other hand, like @TheSolicitorGeneral said; you’re most likely replaced within no time. Only wins for you my friend 👏

Keep the accepted offer on the DL but do let them know that you are at the end stages and could have an offer in hand within a week. As a recruiter (atleast speaking for myself), I will get the manager to move quickly if we are risk of losing someone great to another company.

What would they be offering you that would compel you to walk away from a secured role? Also, how fast would they put you through the process? Would you get to day 1 at the new gig and still be interviewing? Leaving a week or two in is not advisable.

At my dream company, it would be compelling to sell something that I deeply believe in. If $$ is considerably less though, then I would consider staying with my original offer.

An interview with your dream employer is useful on many fronts. 

One, you can determine (from firsthand experience) if they are right for you and if you are right for them.  Two, there will be less pressure as you enter the process knowing you are already locked and loaded with a backup plan.  Third, worst case scenario is it's not a fit now but you open doors and connect with people inside the organization.

All things considered, this seems like a no-brainer to me.  Good luck.

You must be stressed at the timing of this!  We work our whole lives to get a chance to work for our dream company.  I think it is worth doing the interview.  Be sure to stay on top of asking when you will hear back from them hoping it is within the time frame you haven't started for the other company.  

Personally, it's tricky but I would start for the other company and see how far you make it through the process.  If you get an offer, I wouldn't feel bad for leaving the new company because literally everyone is replaceable.  Best of luck!

Take care of priority number one: yourself.  Do not feel bad at all for bailing on the other company, especially for your dream company...hate to say it, but you, me, all of us sales folk are a dime a dozen and that company will find someone else with ease.  Go where you will be most happy.

Accept, keep the interview on the DL because there is no guarantee you will get the dream company job.  Chances are if it is your dream company, it is a lot of people's dream company.

Tons of great comments below, if its truly your dream company, then you go after it, what kind of question is that. Get creative, take sick days, your company doesnt care about your dreams as much as you do (i am not saying they dont care, just the level is different)

Unless there is a SPECIFIC penalty clause in the offer (which would only apply in very restricted circumstances) I would accept the offer and go through the motions with dream company.

Be clear to dream company that even though you're comfortable in your new place you'd never say no to dream company.

Company loyalty is dead in the west. If you want to walk out after a week to chase dream company you have that right. And you never need to mention it on your CV. You can tell future employers you took a month to go hiking after Covid and it suited your dream company to give you a later start date - nobody digs the details

When you get into the later rounds of interviews tell your dream company about the other offer but that you want you work for them and need to move through the process quickly. It’s what i did and i ended up skipping the final round and got a very competitive offer the next day.
