Accidentally blasted email to prospect already engaged

Hello legends,

I have dire need for advice. I just blasted a marketing email to a prospect in a bank I am already engaged with and have already done a demo for. NDAs are signed and everything and we're about to move the deal to the next steps.

This week, I sent out a generic marketing / meeting request email on an automated platform. Unfortunately, to my carelessness, I accidentally sent the email out to him as well, requesting for an initial meeting...sigh. Is this a grave fuck-up, or am I just overthinking it?

Blame marketing or automated email tool and move on. If you are this stressed about something like this you gotta find a way to relax, sales will throw some bigger curveballs at you than this.

This is the answer. Donโ€™t even acknowledge that it was sent, and if they reply/bring it up, just apologize and say you didnโ€™t switch their account to โ€œdo not marketโ€ or something and youโ€™ll have it taken care of so they will stop getting them. Unless you want to keep sending updates, then just pass the blame and move on quickly.

Thanks guys, I'm very quickly realizing this was the absolute least of my worries. Thanks for the solid tips :)

Yeah, this is definitely the answer. I had an old BDR constantly sending "book a demo with me" emails to people who were already in the pipe and had gone through a demo.ย
Our whole AE team was pissed off because he did it like 3 times in a row each week and it was due to him not knowing how to work the CRM.ย
It might cause a speedbump but only minor. Just blame marketing for automation being setup incorrectly.

When in doubt, blame marketing.

Apologize for an overzealous marketing department, it's an automated platform that you were accidentally added into for folks who've opted in to company outreach and updates.

I wouldnโ€™t say anything unless he brings it up, and if he does, apologize on behalf of marketing (who you should absolutely blame in this situation) and explain youโ€™ll make sure that it doesnโ€™t happen again, and then make sure it doesnโ€™t happen again.

You're overthinking it, nothing is gonna happen, I've done this multiple times and I blame a bunch of other departments (like ya do)

If for some odd reason they did notice and make mention of it - just explain that you were testing some outreach material targeted at the more coveted accounts to make them feel special for even getting your spam.

Chances are, they have a sales/marketing program that spams the shit out of people so they'll understand regardless. If 1 random meaningless email kills the deal they were probably going to burn the bridge after negotiations anyways.

Don't sweat it. Shit happens then you die. Trust the process.

Shoot him another email and call yourself out on it. Most people understand that accidents happen. I'm a fan of self-deprecating humor and this would be a good opportunity for a little of that. People like people who don't take themselves too seriously.

For a mistake this minor I doubt it's worth drawing additional attention

Have definitely done this and blamed marketing for their automated emails. Donโ€™t sweat it. Not the first time itโ€™s happened to them either.

You are overthinking this by a million, this prospect saw it said to themselves Iโ€™m already engaged and deleted it, they may not have even seen the email to be honest with you. 50% chance they never even mention it to you.ย

Been there, done that. Laugh it off with the prospect and give yourself a damn break!

9/10 times, they totally understand. Everyone has replied-all when they meant to respond to one person. This is the BD equivalent of that.

Also, learn from this to reinforce your double-check of these automated systems before clicking the go button.
