Account Exec vs Account Manager

So, I'm on the fence between the two and would love to hear pros / cons about both.

I'm set to get promoted in Q4 / Q1 2022 and know for a fact that these 2 roles are in my scope.

I see the AM life being a little better because it's like a hybrid of Sales/CSM vs being an AE where it's just strictly focused on closing.

Granted, I know the AE life probably comes with more OTE potential but at what expense...

Has anyone done both or know both sides of the table?

Well, we know how @GeneralCorpΒ feels about Account Managers....

If you want an easier, comfortable life with less monetary potential go with the AM role. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion, but if you want more risk/reward, AE all day.Β

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
See, I've had friends who were AMs driven insane by their customers. It depends on the potential for disaster and number of accounts from an AM perspective. Being an AE is sometimes fun, often hell but usually pays pretty well.

This has been a con of mine too. But, I think where I’m at has so much room for expansion + majority of users actually get value and love us.

Lol, is there something I’m missing from Corp!?! I think for me, it’s genuinely more enjoyable when you’re talking to people who *for the most part* want to talk to you and hopefully love your product. From there, it’s like let’s see how much we can squeeze from this lemon.

Can there be both? You can upsell some large shit.

Of course. It just hits different. IMO. I like selling to net new account rather than working current customers. Some current customers come with too much baggage from their old rep. I’d rather create that baggage and move on to the next.

I've done both, I think it really depends on:

1. are you motivated by people or money
2. is it easier to sell new biz or upsell at your company
3. do you want to upskill yourself or just more of the same

Think about those things before making a choice because you need to enjoy it at the end of the day

Being an AE can be a bit like Groundhog Day.Β  Each month your Manny be like "what have you done for me lately?"Β  You can ride that bike for a while but it's a grind and for some it's exhausting.Β  One PRO for the AM role is that you can truly build relationships with the contacts within your accounts and that's usually a good thing.Β  It can be negative too but you just don't spend as much time with the assholes.Β  Depending on the industry you also get to wine and dine clients and that can be fun for everyone.Β  However, a true sales killer will get bored with farming accounts.Β  They are definitely two different skill sets.
