Advice for a new golfer

Just started getting into golf. Great way to network, relieve stress and get outside. What part of my game should I work on first?

Work on how to subtly shave strokes off of each hole. Always subtract 1 or 2 per hole is my general rule.

Short game first. Doesn't matter how far you can drive if you 3 putt everything. Next, focus on consistently hitting the fairway. Again, doesn't matter how far you can hit if you have a fat slice into the trees.

Don't feel the need to use your driver on every hole. I only use mine on par 5s, I use my 4H the rest of the time. I am much more consistent that way.

Take lessons, and practice. A lot. I try to play a round every few weeks minimum, and go to the range a lot.

Every time I go out I simply tell myself one thing in the first tee box: you're here to have fun, and we can't keep breaking clubs.

Enjoy the opportunity to be outside, that's the best part of the game.

Oh god this is a loaded question. My best advice would be to make sure you get lessons from a well respected pro. They will help you far more than any community could

Echo everything BigMeech said.

Literally just focus on hitting the ball straight and flush with irons first along with putting.

Work on making 5-10 foot putts (and leaving them inside 1 foot if not made) and 25+ putts (goal here is to leave your putt within 3 feet).

3 putts literally will increase your score 5-10 strokes a round and take 5-10 years off your life.

100% what BigMeech said!

I would add a few things:
- When you practice make sure you focus on GASP - Grip, Aim, Stance & Posture. If you don't get those things right nothing else you do will matter.

- Get some alignment sticks ( https://www.amazon.com/Champkey-Alignment-Sticks-Practice-Outdoor/dp/B08CVS5DCR/ref=sr_1_6?crid=3LC831WES2LDR&dchild=1&keywords=golf+alignment+stick&qid=1625747913&sprefix=golf+alig%2Caps%2C206&sr=8-6). Alignment is super important and if you don't have good alignment it leads to so many other problems, so use them every time you practice.

- Also, when you go to the driving range be thoughtful about how you use your time, don't just hit a bunch of balls. First, warm up and stretch, then divide you session into three parts. First part, warm up getting loose by hitting 1/3 of your balls. Second part, technical practice where you focus on a specific thing that you're working on in your swing. Third part, aim practice where you try to simulate playing on the course with different clubs and different shots.

- Most importantly, get lessons - it will make golf a lot more fun for you. Find a good pro in your area and get some lessons, ideally have they use video to analyze and show you your swing, as it makes it a lot easier to make changes. I have used GolfTec with good results in the past, and have found that one lesson per 2 weeks/1 month works well.

- HAVE FUN! Any day on the golf course is better than being in the office.

Start with a cheap set or used clubs. Get lessons from a respected pro. After many months of working with a pro you will start to become more consistent. When that happens, get fitted with your own set of clubs at your local golf shop or golf club.

Through this process, go to the range more than the course. Playing 18 holes as a beginner can be frustrating, just don't give up!
