Advice for those looking to change jobs

Ive seen a few posts about ppl asking if they should changes roles, or if they will be better off staying at their current org.

Here is some advice, take it or leave it.

Overall you need to evaluate what you really want in a new job, consider these things:

1 Do you want to be in a big company or small company?

  • Big companies can have lots of processes figured out and more defines paths for promotion
  • Small companies will ask you to be flexible and may not have everything figured out but you could advance quicker.

2 Big deals or small deals?

  • not everyone should be an enterprise rep selling $500,000 - $1MM deals.
  • THink about what motivates you? satisfaction of closing lots of deals and getting to move onto a new account often? Or only getting to focus on a small number of accounts and having to be more strategic. There is plenty of money to be made in both roles

3 What type of product do you want to sell?

  • a commodity product? where people know exactly what it is, but your job is to explain why you are better than the competition
  • a brand new product? something that people do not know exists? you are not really selling against competitors as much as you are sellign against the status quo.

4 Do you want to be in office or remote?

  • most jobs are remote not (i think) but think about what is the best set up for you.
  • Some of us have been forces to work remotely and cant wait to be around other, or you loving the work from home life and dont want to change.

figure these things out and your job search will be MUCH easier.

let me know what questions you have.

Hey, I want an Enterprise sales job that closes a lot of deals fast. I would like 200K base. I don't want to have to cold call. Can anyone recommend me a job, refer me, and prep me for the interview? Thanks!

Nice post. Itโ€™s hard to think through many of these when you live in your own bubble.
Career wise, itโ€™s good to determine, honestly, if you are a better IC or manager. Sometimes life is easier when you know yourself. And being a manager isnโ€™t all that itโ€™s cut out to be - although it can appear like itโ€™s the golden ring to many the young buck.

100% agree with this. I was being pursued for a director of sales role and it was super exciting but I had to take a hard look at my self and my family and they way we operate, and knew that staying as an IC (for now at least) is the best way to go.

It's easy to dive into a deep rabbit hole of opportunity. I like that this post just circles back to my / your personal why of it all. What DRIVES me? What do I want? What do I see myself enjoying more or hating less? lol. Basics is key.ย
