AE's, BDMs, and Sales Managers - Would you go back to being an SDR to see if you still got it?

recently picked up a part time commission role at a software company that didn't wana pay fulltime wages or benefits or a salary but i took it as an opportunity to see if i can still kill it as i once did in my jr roles.

have any of ya'll considered doing the same?

Totally not something I'd be interested in doing.

But I'll tell you a secret - I was never a BDR or SDR.   I skipped that step.

I do visualize taking a shift at a restaurant and blow them all away with my superior skills...even though it's been more than 20 years.  Then I think, nah.   And tip heavily.

AE during the day...that's an origin story.

In all fairness skipping over SDR is respectful. I know a few folks who did that when coming in from different industries. What was your first sales role title?

Ha same, I was waitstaff for years at university and I dream about having a restaurant sometimes. Then I remember that I like eating at restaurants better than working at them.

I also skipped a lead gen role but I’ve always had to do my own prospecting anyway

I did this sometimes during call blitzes for example. I'd put on my SDR Hat for a day to show the kids how it's done and to keep my skills sharp.

But I would not go back full time, no way.

Good on you to still step back in the ring. We make jokes about VPs and how they haven't closed a deal since 1840. Mad respect to those who still lead from the frontline.

I am still the only SDR at Bravado, and work hard to feed leads to our VP and AE. It's the most important part of the sales process (no leads, no deals).

Nice. Thats actually quite amazing. how does the pressure of trying to bust it as an SDR work now compared to your earlier years in sales? is it the same excitement, nervousness and stress? or has it become something else?

Well, he’s not an SDR. He’s a founder that has the responsibility of several salaries on his head. If he doesn’t open up doors he will be shutting his. That’s the ultimate stress, innit @sahil

I’ve never been an SDR, only a BDR that’s an AE but, no. Honestly SDR jobs sound really, really horrendous. Literally any other sales industry is better. IMO. I’d sling booze and spend my days as a territory manager in Walmarts, Publix stores and Whole Foods in Naples, FL circa ‘12 before hanging over a phone. Oh wait 😎

I still got it. I definitely still got it. Would I be rusty? Maybe a little. Probably a little, but I definitely still got it.

I don’t need to work 6x as hard for 20% of the money to prove it. I did my time in the trenches.

This is you moonlighting for cash, and are offering a more experienced person than the company can afford.

Doesn't have to be moonlight. It could simply even be a thing where a senior in sales wants to take a project to see if they can still crush it

as for highschool - never had an issue handling it the first time. I could probably crush it the second xD

Not a chance. That role was boring, degrading, monotonous, and bad for my mental health in general. I wouldn't encourage anyone to take a SDR role unless they were really passionate about that specific company. There's enough companies that will hire full cycle AEs straight out of college that wont trap you in that "no closing experience" cycle.

If you’re an AE, I suggest taking the SDR mentality. Would I go back? That’s a hell to the no... But part of me is still there - just with more fulfillment.

If you clasify an SDR as just a lead gen person, this is a moot argument to me since I am responsible for my own pipeline.  Even when I had SDRs, I was still responsible.  No one should rely 100% on SDRs for their pipeline.
