AITA for not wanting to compete with Tweets and Meta folks in the job market?

Everybody loves a good AITA post so here goes: Am I the Asshole for being more sad about now having to share the job market with the newly laid off Meta and Twitter folks than for the fact that they were laid off? 

For context, I've been in an extended interview process (a few months) for a job I was super excited about and felt was going well, and realized this week that there are now some people suddenly in the job market that could be the reason I'm not hearing back. But instead of feeling bad for them, I'm feeling bitter. 

Am I the Asshole?

If I was an engineer, absolutely. However, I am curious how many sales reps from Meta and Twitter will breaking into SaaS causing a saturation of applicants. Maybe the layoffs at SFDC or others, but not them. Also my assumption with Twitter is sales wouldn't be affected that much since the main issue was revenue and finding new revenue streams.

This opinion was solely formed on reading headlines and no research, solely a guess

Meta people sold their soul. Hope you enjoyed that tasty paycheck working for a straight up evil company, but the fun is over now.

Twitter I have more sympathy. But you're allowed to be pissed off that you have more competition in an already tough job market.

People that sell for Meta, Twitter, SFDC aren’t exactly perfect fits in SAAS. SFDC is the dominant player in their space and very few SAAS companies can say that so their sale is more challenging. Twitter and Meta aren’t SAAS products it’s advertising.

Lol at the YTA voters… they’re either lying to themselves or not actually competitive enough for sales. Of course, anytime you’re out at a disadvantage it’s likely to upset you to some degree. Acknowledging their awful position and how that may have an effect on you too is normal self-preservation. I’d be worried too if I was looking in a suddenly flooded/ing job market!

That’s always a risk. People are getting let go all of the time. Just gotta get that offer and close. Give them a clock and be prepared to walk away.

Just tell them that you have have an offer somewhere else or your team is giving you your next year number, and you don’t want to leave them hanging by leaving mid-cycle. It makes you look responsible, and sets you up for a move in 6 months if you’d like.

That makes sense. I was initially too honest and told the recruiter I wasn’t really interviewing for other roles. So maybe the 2023 planning will be the better route. Thanks for the suggestion!

Pissed because the recruiters will squirt in their pants to hire them because of the logo on resume, not for qualifications. If you were so good, your businesses wouldn’t be failing

My heart goes out to all of them, but aside from that lot of these orgs had overestimated the market demand after the anomaly that was 2021 and way overhired. As such, these layoffs don’t surprise me and no matter how much I want everyone to live a happy and healthy life with a successful career, I’d rather not have too many more people to compete with making it harder to find my ideal gig.

Agreed. I’m certainly not immune to the human element of it all, but the reality is that many of these companies are able to make massive cuts right now because they had a ton of redundancies in their roles and teams, and a lot of people whose costs exceeded their contributions. Having worked with many of these teams as well, I’m always surprised at how underwhelming the players are. But yet, to @mastersfan and @Nairobi ‘s points, hiring managers will trip over themselves just to get to those ex-Meta and ex-Twitter folks on their rosters.
