AITA? Life in startup land

Preface: I don't know a lot about marketing. I sell stuff.

Question: What have most people found most helpful when it comes to getting inbound leads at a startup? The company I work for was killing it with Google search campaigns and getting a good flow of inbound leads. They switched to Google display network and now things have gone to complete shit. The problem is we have tried bringing this up to our CRO and all we hear is how great the cost per lead has been (keep in mind these leads are worth less than 0).

Any advice on how to get leadership to pull their heads out of their asses?

Follow the data.  If you can show the lead flow/close conversion/average deal size for, say the 6 months or 1 year up to what you did and then compare to after the change was made, you have substantive financial data to back your position up--do all the work for the CRO since it will impact and benefit your pocket

Missing $X of sales because you are saving $Y marketing dollars, there should be a net positive to pay more for better leads which translates to better revenue and margins

Agreed, you need metrics to perform the head-removal-from-ass operation with any C-Suite member. Make their decision easy.

If they are smart, they will figure out that leads don't close like they use to. I'd bring that up but without going over your boss's head.

Keep in mind you need a solid pool of data (i.e. pipeline generated) to make this work.

Document everything and collect data on everything. Don't get too heated when you talk about it either
