SaaS Sales Savages.. Thoughts on part-time?

Jumping straight into it—

I work full-time in B2B sales, capital equipment. Not tech.

The more I read about tech sales, the more I have an itch to try it out.

What do you all think about working a part-time/side-hustle SaaS sales job as an independent contractor to see if I like it? I understand it may be full commission in this case, but the thought process is I would get a taste of the day-to-day and see if it is for me or not. Maybe even make a little side income.

On a similar note—What do you think about sites like SaaSboost.io and the like to try and land a part-time gig?

Thanks for any thoughts/advice.

I didn't know there was a market for part-time SaaS gig work?

I'm not sure how someone could work part time in SaaS sales to be honest. What are the concerns keeping you from going into it 100%?

Why do you think part time is not realistic? Not arguing you here, genuinely wondering why. So I work full time now and enjoy my job. Im out and about as often as I want to be, and unless Im totally misunderstood, SaaS sales will be a lot of phone time. It would be neat to try it out and see if I can spend a day on the phone exclusively. Another obstacle to going full time SaaS is my lack of knowledge (working on it) regarding what makes a good company to work and sell for.

I say that because SaaS sales is a full time job. You get out what you put in, so if you don't have time to put in 100% you aren't going to see the returns you're hoping for.

Given that you have no experience in SaaS, it will be nearly impossible to land a closing role. They'll want you to start as a S/BDR where you'll be hitting the phones all day long and emailing to generate meetings. That role is not something you can do part time unless you're an absolute beast and can crush your work and book meetings in 4 hours/day.

I guess what I would do first is familiarize yourself with the common roles in SaaS. SDR and BDR are your entry level roles, and then AEs do new sales, AMs do existing clients/upsells and you have SEs that partner with AEs in some orgs and are the "technical" side of things.

Understand each of those roles I mentioned and then you will have your own understanding of why a part-time SaaS job would be very difficult especially without any industry knowledge.

Fair point. Just like my sales job now, I get out of it what I put in.

I think the idea of part-timing would be to test the waters without giving up what I have now job-wise.

I understand the roles well, as they mirror my industry's sales roles, and are pretty typical sales org roles. Although, I think I will research your points deeper.

Another of my concerns of making the jump would be taking steps back to be a S/BDR. Looks like I have a lot to look into!

Thanks for the feedback

I haven’t personally heard of companies hiring part-time reps outside of internship roles.

I came across a site named saasboost.io that lists part-time roles. That is what sparked this thought for me.

Fractional sales team for super small startups who can’t pay a salary. Not really the full-on environment experience that you’re looking for. Capital equipment pays well, why change?

You're right, it is more of an interest that I would like to explore that way one day I don't feel like I'm missing out. But your point about not experience the true environment is probably pretty accurate.
