Am I being cheated on income?

Hello,
I have been with the same company going on 3 years now out of college. I began as a sales coordinator making $19 an hour. after a year I was promoted to an account manager making 21.25 an hour. I have hit my sales goal already this year of 3.4 million. I currently do not receive any commission and may receive a quarterly bonus of about 1k only if our sales team hits their goal for the quarter. I have been grinding this job, but there is no financial reward. I'm a bit lost on where to go from here.

Where are you located?! And what industry?

$3.4M is a ton of money, you should get a cut and should have a base reflective of that level of responsibility.

Hi jefe, I’m currently located in Milwaukee, WI. I’m in the Traffic Industry, selling intelligent warning systems (pedestrian crosswalks, overheight warning, wrong way driving) systems and software.

Basically making 43k is pretty far below just base at most tech sales roles. 3 years in you can probably make the switch, but will take some time with non-industry experience.

Without knowing too much more, I would recommend looking at Repvue and put some feelers out there if you are more money motivated

What industry are you currently in? This doesn't sound like your standard sales/account management pay structure, so I'm curious.

Do you have AEs? Are they base + commission?

I’m currently in the Traffic safety industry. We sell all large intelligent warning systems. We have AE’s on the same pay structure. They are changing the structure a bit with AE being the ginnie pigs to see how a commission structure works. The only way to reach commission is to hit year end goal and you would make a percentage on any amount over your goal.

only getting paid commission when you over-achieve your goal is robbery.

It doesn't really sound like a sales job - hourly rate and no commission. Do your reps travel?

Is this a new company with novice sales management? I mean, you don't really need guinea pigs to know how commission works. You pay your reps a base salary and then a % of the sales they bring in. The incentive to reach the target and max out commission is how your company will increase their sales and make the team happy. I'm just very confused as to how you have AEs who aren't constantly churning.

Our AE’s live out of state and travel within their territories. I currently work onsite at our facility location and oversee 5 states, a distributor and international sales. I’m responsible to travel about every 2-3 months to my territory

Yeah, I'd say you're underpaid, by a lot. You're operating as sales and compensated as the sales coordinator still. And I can't believe your AEs are compensated similarly.

I have a 1.5 million quota with a $250,000 OTE. (100k base and 10%). Granted I am older with over ten years in and a very niche technical market with a couple rare international certifications.

However I would say you need to be at least $75k base with some kind of commission on every deal, even if it’s one percent damn. Being a junior AE and doing 3 million you should at least be a $100,000 person.

You need a new job like yesterday and your company sounds like a bunch of crooks.

Not sure how to actually connect in real life off this platform but I can tell my CEO to let me leave my role and hire you.

In my opinion, yes, and it is very common, companies feel that you owe them something because they "educated you" I think it is time for you to look for new opportunities, new horizons and with them a better salary and incentives

Short Answer: Yes!

I think you're at the right place with the right questions though. In this community, you can openly discuss your income, since you're anonymous, and so are we!

Use the "Search Bar" at the top to find out more (though the advice in this thread seems to be super-rich already).

This is way below what an average base should look like.
And you do have 3 years of experience as well. Yes, you are being cheated on this one.

Two things. First, congrats on killing the year with that type of production. Kudos to you, your team, and all the hard work you've done. Second thing...you're DEFINITELY being underpaid if you're bringing in 3.4 million for a company only paying you 43K. That is not a place for growth and your talents are sorely needed at a ton of other places that would pay you 3X and more to have that production.

Sales jobs = commission pay
Ask your management what they’re doing.
If you like sales being paid hourly, you’re gonna LOVE it when you’re making commission 😂😂😂

IMO you should EASILY be earning 6 figures. I’d even say you should have a 6 figure base or high 5 at the very least… How long / complex is your sales cycle? ACV? Are you running a deal team or is it a transactional sales process?

You’re getting hosed my friend look into a new role asap.
