Any Advice for someone looking to get into tech sales?

Hope all is well ladies & gents!

I'm having trouble finding a tech sales job & I'd be super pumped to hear if you have any advice?

The past 5 years I shadowed my father at a GM dealership. Averaged 14 hour days, 6 days a week doing:

  • 2 years as top performing sales associate. Closing rate 12% higher than industry average. Modified orgs sales process for a specific ICP and ran bi-weekly meetings on sales tips.
  • 3 years as marketing manager. Helped dealership become the #1 in its region. I had to stop all ads & content on EV's since we had too many buyers & not enough inventory pre covid.

I thought I was qualified for an SDR or AE position in the tech industry but I've been applying for the past 2 months & I haven't gotten anything... If I was a fisherman I would've starved by now.

Any advice is appreciated!

Cheers

As to not given you absolutely no helpful insight... there's no way in hell you don't "qualify" to be an SDR.
My dogs qualify to be SDRs.

Also, you should search this question. This has been asked a lot in quite a few different ways. Lots of good info on those threads.

How are you applying? Just sending your resume? If so, that’s where the problem lies

You have great experiences though maybe not perfect if applying not for an entry job in tech (you’ll be competing against people with experience in tech…)

To compensate, I’d suggest reaching out to the team via cold email/LinkedIn - not only to the hiring manager but sales manager and people currently doing the same
job in the company. Showing your true sales nature and motivation.

Anything that will help you standing out!

If you're on a laptop rather than mobile, you have a search bar, there have been a few discussions about SDR jobs, and you might be able to glean some intel.

To the left is a link for jobs - I encourage you to fill out your profile, as it's another possible avenue for success.

Your request is thorough, with great grammar - you'd be a steal as an SDR/BDR.

Where are you looking?

Focus on the accomplishments rather than the industry in your resume. A high achiever will tend to do well no matter what they sell.

I made the switch from media to tech. Its not easy but sometimes you gotta be patient. It took me a while but I got it done and I'm happier than ever. Also the search bar can help with this

SDR is an entry level aspect to any org for sales. You should be able to find something, just keep looking.

Can I send you a dm? I may have a opportunity, but I don’t know if you have DMs, since it is only available on iOS.

You may have better luck applying to automotive tech companies as a first step. Checkout Dealertrack, CDK Drive. Anyone who sells to car dealerships.
