Any Business Development people here?

Hey WR, I'm not talking about BDRs or lead gen folks, but wondering about traditional business development and partnership type roles. Not sure if the WR attracts these people as they are not traditional savages like us, but really curious...

I've always been interested in these roles as a potential pivot out of the sales grind. Higher base, lower bonus, less stress (I think?). These are the peeps that work on those long term, company wide, b2b sorts of deals. As an example, a partnership role at Roku might be someone who is trying to strike deals with content providers to start carrying their programming on the Roku network.

I'm close with some reps who work on our partnership teams. The vibe I get from them is that a.) They're all people people, so they're good at maintaining relationships and b.) They tend to be veteran sellers (Like 10-15 years plus in account sales)

I would just overperform at your current role in account sales for a few years and then see if anyone in a BD role in your company would want to mentor you.

I agree here. It seems like they're OG sellers who could close but were done with the grind and would rather lean on their Rolodex for their future business. Which isn't a bad way to be.

That's great feedback, and exactly what I was thinking.  I'm trying to set up the opportunity to shadow the BD team as we speak.

Im more towards partnership style. So I have a full sales cycle where I start and close the deal then manage it.

But you still need to hit a quota in BD whether it's a strategic partnership or entering new markets/footprint expansion, so the stress is not any less than SD.
