Anybody Else Annoyed With The Mainstream Media?

Been noticing a lot of censorship and gaslighting from the mainstream media recently. Lots of half truths and people beating around the bush rather than having honest conversations and considering all sides. I'm not saying I'm for or against anything and I understand this isn't a political forum, but I do wonder how people are coping with all the uncertainty and polarization happening in modern day society.

Personally, I've been trying to write more, read books, and listen to people who I think ask thought provoking questions and follow the truth (So far none of these people have been found on a mainstream network, but instead on platforms like Youtube and Spotify). Exercise also helps, but it's been pretty cold up here in Boston so might need to get back in action on this platform and see if I can win a Peloton ๐Ÿคฃ. I joke, but the reason I bring this up is because somedays I feel an existential dread that makes cold calling strangers the last thing I want to do.

Anyways, not sure I'm looking for any specific answer. Would love to hear what is providing people hope at the moment.

For me it has been getting a real Christmas tree for the first time as an adult. Working from home smells so much better with my tree in the living room.

Is the media fusing your dread, or your perception of it?

Be careful now. Youโ€™re one Joe Rogan comment away from a thick neck beard and a moderatorship on Reddit.ย

Hi Chep, we missed u.ย

I stopped paying close attention to social and mainstream media years ago. I deleted my socials and rarely do I look at the news unless thereโ€™s something I want more info about. Itโ€™s all noise - mostly negative noise to distract, scare, anger, and polarize people against each other. Itโ€™s been like night and day since I stopped wasting my time looking at it.ย

I choose to fill most of my free time with books, podcasts, hobbies that donโ€™t involve the internet/TV, exercise, music, getting into nature, and most importantlyโ€ฆliving in real life. Real life is not IG, TikTok, or LinkedIn. Real life is not the news. Itโ€™s also not some politician or celebrity (on either side.) Real life is what you can control, and all of the beautiful things right in front of your face.ย

This decision has changed my life. I feel so much more positive, fulfilled, and my anxiety has literally disappeared. I treat myself and my loved ones better. I can truthfully say I feel gratitude for every single day. Even on the bad days I force myself to remember that I have a place to live, a fridge full of food, people that care about me, and my health. Thatโ€™s more than most people in the world so wtf do I really have to complain about?ย

Itโ€™s been so worth the small sacrifice of not always being in the know or explaining to a fellow millennial that Iโ€™m not on the โ€˜gram and having most of them look at me like I just grew a second head.ย

O Iโ€™m sorry, is a book gonna tell you who is dating Pete Davidson? I think not!ย

I try and use social media to follow only my interests and not anything political. Big difference, although Steelers twitter has a lot of negativity right nowโ€ฆ

If youโ€™re in the US, try foreign sources of news. BBC, The Economist, etc. I think they do a well balanced job reporting on whatโ€™s happening here because they arenโ€™t relying on partisanship to drive views. Just my two cents.ย

Also, support local news. The person writing about your local city counsel meetings or investigating an economic issue for your region is probably doing a great job and being ignored for big national news providers.ย

It's best not to pay too much attention to the entertainment news media.ย  You've probably noticed that the ever-more breathless headlines rarely align to the actual facts of the story, and that some stories are better written (e.g., containing more facts) than others.

But who has the time for that garbage?ย  Seriously.ย ย I've only watched 24 hour news channels when there is some huge story breaking.ย  Otherwise, media consumption around here is sporting events for some, books for others, and frankly, staying away from all of it and getting out into nature as much as possible.ย  ย Avoiding what has led so many down some wacky rabbit hole into an alternate reality is pretty easy if you keep the idiot box off and avoid YouTube recommendations when they stray away from cat videos.

I do indulge in nature porn (it's a beautiful world), and if you want hope, even in the face of potential climate disaster, listen to Sir David Attenborough, who is a realist but also an eternal optimist.

Christmas trees and enjoying the season are great ways to bring some hope.ย  ย That smell is the BEST!ย  ย I hope you enjoy.

Being outside, going on long walks and listening to podcasts. I know he's not a popular figure among certain people, but one quote that has stuck with me in regards to taking care of my mental health is by Jordan Peterson.ย

His chapter in his book is titled "Treat yourself like someone you're responsible for helping". Puts a lot of things in perspective at times.ย

I honestly can't watch anymore.

Local news sure, a couple random articles, but everything is so well designed to fire up emotions it's unhealthy.

If anyone has other sources, please share.ย

This is part of the reason I listen to audiobooks on my commute. I'm tired of hearing half stories on the news and all the radio DJ personalities are just not funny on top of playing the same songs over and over.

I get my news from custom Google News feeds mostly. As much as I want to unfollow people and items I don't care about, I don't want to live in an echo chamber. I put up with a few people on FB and IG just to keep my opinions in check.

Radio DJs are so cringe. I recently bought an alarm clock with a wake up light that simulates sun (love it) and it has a built in radio. I hadn't listened to the radio in literally years so I thought I'd turn it on and see what's up. I couldn't take more than a minute of listening to any station before I turned that shit off. Between the obnoxiously unfunny DJs, annoying as fuck commercials, and shitty music...it's a no from me dawg.ย

The only station that was tolerable was one of the university stations, but even then it's a mixed bag. They do some cool electronic/classical music sets, but then sometimes it's oogie boogie jambalaya hippie music that grates my soul and I have to turn it off.

FM DJs are the absolute worst, I listened to talk radio for a while but even that drives me nuts with some of the shitty opinions they spout out and repeated commercials and news cycle every 10 mins.

I can only now stand the radio when I'm driving with other people and that is only because I will horribly sing along or make up my own words until I'm begged to stop.

I think Canadian radio is especially bad since they are mandated to play Canadian artists more often and we only have so many.

Yesss, ugh the Canadian content requirement is so annoying. Might as well call it the Nickleback, Bieber, and Tragicially Hip station at this point.

And the gov't has the audacity to use our taxes to pay for ad space telling you about Canadian content requirements in between the station playing Drake or Mother Mother songs for the 100th time.

The problem is that there is not 24 hours worth of news in a day. So they give one hour of news and 23 hours of opinions. My suggestion, read the news from a real newspaper (Or newspaper website), and don't read any articles that say "Opinion" or "Editorial" at the top. That should take a lot of the color commentary out and let you for your own opinions.ย

Just throwing this out there, mainstream social media would benefit from the "upvote/downvote" function.
