Anyone else absolutely fucking hate coming into a pointless office everyday?

Why would any salesperson need to report to an office EVERY SINGLE MORNING? But maybe that’s me. Do you like reporting to an office?

Do you like to report to a physical office each day?

Yeah and it’s very interesting because the position is essentially 100% commissions (I keep my base salary as long as I hit the minimum threshold for qualified meetings each month) and it makes you wonder why he cares to know what the fuck I’m doing so much because if I’m not producing he doesn’t even have to pay me!

Sounds like you're working for an a-hole. I changed jobs back in March and GRILLED me current boss (who is awesome) about expectations in my role. Having interviewed a fair amount of people myself, I always found candidates that really dig in and push for details come off as more confident and I was always more likely to hire something like that. Hope that's helpful!

RUN! There are tons of sales roles open right now, you can find something better for sure!

The only reason managers want you in office is because they don't know how to manager and want to micromanage you.

I would like to see a breakdown in age for the split as well. I think older people (45+) like having a not-home place to go. Vs younger folks like their own space.

I actually am curious if this is true...I found our older generation preferred WFH as they are disciplined, have families, routine for succes, etc. VS the younger folks are looking to make connections, network, have office friendships and socialization and ability to ask questions and get more regular feedback.

And I am here from a young family perspective.
WFH has saved thousands in childcare costs.
I get to garden at lunch, take calls from the hot tub. The littlest child is almost a full year into this and I think they might not even know I work.
My partner has been thankful for me just doing dishes, cleaning between calls.

Boomers just want to golf.

Or think you're doing what they would do in a WFH scenario, which is sweet fuck all.

I'm 29 and agree with this. Most of my team is made up of millennials and very few of us want to work from home permanently, it seems. The only exception seems to be those with young children.

I've heard a lot of feedback about how it's tough to feel motivated/stay focused working from home for long periods, and given we're all pretty outgoing I think a lot of us really miss the social aspect that an office brings.

A hybrid where working from home is a choice seems to be the preference for most of us.

If you are an IC Boomer, you are just there to get the job done. I don't blame them as long as the results are there lol if you have a book of business/efficiency, take a golf day.

I'm 27 and I would never work non-remote (at least not in the foreeseable future). I would never give up my new routine that has included much healthier habits such as a better work-out schedule, wayyyyy healthier eating, saving money (mostly not ordering out lunch), and just more productivity with more flexibility in my work schedule (If I stayed up too late, I will much rather take a nap or a later start and work later in a heartbeat to get more done than waste my whole morning!!)

And not to mention travel! I have so much opportunity to see the world (and is actually the biggest perk to one of my employees who is in a different city every month lol)

Millennial here. I want to WFH for rest of my career and I also just want to golf. I think <30 yrs old it makes perfect sense to want to social/camaraderie aspects of going into the office. Once you have a family or just care less about socializing, WFH is sooo nice.

^^THIS. It's so true. My grind was so much harder when work doubled as my social life. But now that I have other priorities...I'm way more efficient...and honestly been having the most successful year being more focused on results, efficiency, and the job as a job, not personal, it's paid off way more monetarily than the 12-14 hour grinds I put in at the office.

Shoot, I clicked the wrong button. I do NOT report to my office every day lol. I think going forward once ours does open up I may go in a few times as needed (probably will EOQ for easy access to legal, etc) but will definitely be a hybrid model.

This is completely dependent on your personal situation.  I'm 35, school-aged kids, but i abso-fuckin-lutely LOVE WFH.  Laundry and housework is kept up on and is actually a great stress reliever after a bad meeting or call.  I'm also 3 years in so my book of business is strong.

On the other hand if I was just starting out or didn't have family I might prefer going to the office as a way to eliminate distractions and focus on grinding out at least 80 dials a day. *(which was my average I would say for the first 2 years with my current employer)

Just like everyone else here, I think a hybrid model but when it comes to sales, if you are consistently crushing quotas your company should not give a rat's fuck where you are doing it from.  (IMO)

Needless to day, I'm applying elsewhere.

I’d love to get some opinions on this one. My company is old school in our approach to office time and reporting in each morning and night.

This is just for the first year while we train and make sure they ramp / see success. After that they can earn flex to WFH.

Basically we don’t give it from the jump. Earned through tenure and performance.

I’ve always thought this was super fair but reading this thread has me questioning if we need to scrap tenure and go purely on performance.

For context: most of my team is straight out of college or first sales job and structure is so necessary.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

I think your approach is very fair, especially since you're hiring college students or people fresh to sales. The first year is incredibly important for training, mentorship, and learning and it's very tough to give someone the same experience while they're at home.

I think you should have flexibility.

and obviously assuming you’re performing to a degree, have the opportunity to choose to come in or work from home.

I DO NOT miss the commute. This year I moved to a city an hour away but worked out a deal that I come in once a month but besides that am fully remote.
Works out so I can see family when I visit too.
But I DO miss having better connection with my sales peers. I'm in a specialized market so we all approach stuff differently (not software) so I feel I lose a bit of edge being remote while they are not.

So I try to keep tight with my VP to make sure I'm up to par on everything.

I'm speaking from the perspective of someone who started their career during the height of covid. I spent the first 6 months of my career never meeting anyone face-to-face. I'm only 23, but I love the two days a week I currently spend in the office. Not sure I'd want to be going in a full 5 days a week, but I definitely need some f2f time with my colleagues! But then again, I am an extreme extrovert...

It's the same case I'm seeing with companies hiring right now and asking if I'm open to relocating to a city.  To me, seems like an outdated question, considering the amount of flexibility other places are providing their employees.

I hate WFH. Sure, the freedom to dial in boxers is dope - but honestly sitting in a little box calling people all day is such a drag.

I gotta have that NRG from the sales floor.

The best part of covid was allowing WFH. I go into the office Tuesday - Thursday and find myself very productive there. Most times I get enough of my work done during the week days that I am able to take a half day Friday. Being allowed to work remotely has improved my teams overall success rate.
