Anyone else having their legal teams implement super restrictive "telemarketing" rules for prospecting?

Hey savages - I work for a large, publicly-traded SaaS org in the HR tech space. I just got out of an internal meeting where our AE team was told we are not allowed to call externally sourced (ZoomInfo, Company Website, etc.) phone numbers anymore unless we are given permission to call them via email or LinkedIn.

I'm an AE on a midmarket team responsible for new logo acquisition. We rely pretty heavily on cold calling, so much so that we have a minimum call activity (dials + talk time) threshold that we have to meet monthly.

This seems pretty crazy to me, and I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this lately. If you have, have you had any success adjusting your outbound cadences?

Everyone was warned about CCPA, GDPR, etc, and here we are.

Agree and there are many more amendments to come.

I used to think having to disclose that I was on a recorded line was obnoxious haha.

No marketing, mayo isn't an MQL
Interesting since Zoominfo makes a big song and dance about being CCPA and GDPR compliant.

Agreed - rather key to their business model.

Wow...that seems pretty wild to me as well. If someone's number is publicly accessible on the internet, I've always thought of it as fair game.

If you put down your cell phone number on a PTA form that was uploaded to your kid's school's PTA meeting minutes... fair game (for the record, it was end of year and I NEEDED that signature. I never disclosed how I got her number, but I got the signature)

Hang on a sec. How are they gonna know where you got the number from if you are the one entering it in the CRM?

Really wishing I could share my team's Slack channel on these updates. This is some top-tier content. I think I am about to witness an attempted coup d'etat.

The recent restrictions and limitations our company is putting on our sales teams is fucking insane. Without getting into detail it feels like some lawyer is just sitting in his cube trying to think of the most ridiculous ways he can make our lives harder.

We have State based restrictions. I think California and New York, off the top of my head.

This is terrible advice from your legal team. There are zero laws that say phone numbers have to be consented to call. Even in EMEA with GDPR and CCpA in CA, the courts have ruled that sales and marketing outreach is a legitimate business use case and protected. Man, why do companies hire people who’s sole purpose is create issues where their shouldn’t be issues.

This sounds ridiculous, but also exactly what you'd expect from the *legal* team at an HR-focused company.

As far as I know it’s compliant with GDPR to cold call a business if you have the reason to think your product/service would be of help. And I don‘t call businesses where I don’t think exactly this, would be time wasting.

Has anyone taken any sales training from the Sandler Sales System? My company is putting me through their program right now, and it seems like they say the same thing over and over again...?
