9 years sober... not coincidentally the 9 best years of my selling career

Can you share how you adjusted given the culture of sales?

Having a family made it easier. I had 3 infants at the time, so a ready made excuse to leave early and/or avoid boozy events altogether

In terms of the stress of sales, i replaced drinking with exercise. I was fit growing up, so it was a big mindset shift but not completely foreign

Yeah, I just decided to heavily cut back my drinking a few months ago. I'm seeing if I prefer/can make work the just a few drinks vs the "let's get it" mindset so pervasive in sales. If I'm not feeling it or it's just too tricky of a line, I'll go the sober route.

Not sure how to replace it though. Exercise is something I deeply disdain, despite a very athletic youth. So that's actually a stressor, not a help for me.

that's tough, but its just a filler for that gap. plenty of hobbies out there to choose from, you just gotta find one that fulfils your needs for stress release. meditation, gaming, poker, hiking... there must be something other than booze that can ease the stress?

i must admit though when i was just coming out of what was essentially 15 years drunk or hungover, it felt to me like a HUGE hole in my life that i'd never be able to fill. a few months later, i realised for me personally, alcohol was holding me back, not helping me get through

Getting a DUI helped me. I wouldn't suggest for anyone to wait until they get one but it definitely changed my perspective. Been sober for a few years, feeling great and loving it. Alcohol was definitely my problem, I just had to get rid of it.

I have absolutely no dependency and alcohol. That being said, with access being easy, and too much free time on my hands after work, I do smoke a little bit too much green. Nobody can really tell because I still perform, but it does have an impact on my life. I travel for work frequently, and I’m able to stop overnight as a result. So I wouldn’t say I have any real addictions, but some vices.

I was actually thinking about this topic yesterday- I always make progress career/fitness/hobby wise when i lay off the booze/benders. I think Im going to challenge my self to lay off for a while until there is something really worth celebrating.

I’m in the same boat and have been trying to pick and choose the party weekends versus going hard all the time. I’ve chosen events/celebrations over the next couple of months and kind of laid out when I’ll be partying and the rest of the weekends I’m just trying to keep it mellow at home and doing active shit on the weekends instead of raging

2 years sober here. Everything in life is better. Everything. One thing that has helped me is just being honest that I don’t drink. People don’t force you and I’ve never felt like they treated me differently. People get it.

I used to have to entertain a lot so I drank a ton - now it's all all Zoom meetings and I'll the occasional client drinks w/ dinner. My sleep has improved greatly since I no longer have to drink weekly.

Look right back at them and say “how do YOU do it while intoxicated?”

I know I joke, but honestly I’m finding that I really can’t drink much anymore. That, and I don’t drink around prospects and clients so 🤷‍♀️

But really I've heard people on this platform smoke weed before a call blitz. Like how do you do that and deliver? I gotta stay sharp to be somewhat effective.

I’ve never been a drinker and there are tons of alternatives. Being in the Army, I always got this look too. I guess growing up with an alcoholic just turned me away from it thankfully.

I am. I learned when I was younger alcohol and business don’t mix. Someone always oversteps/is over served/crosses a line. It’s better to be the only sober person silently judging all the idiots making bad choices than be one of them

First off, congrats to all of you on your sobriety.  I’ve never battled, but have never been a drinker, and I can agree it can be difficult in sales.

It's not just luck, it's knowing how to do things and if you sold it was because you did a good job

I'll occasionally have a beer or two - never enough to get buzzed. No hard alcohol or drugs for me.

I'm trying to transition from the party lifestyle into a more sober one and it is very difficult! All of my friends are still in the scene and there are things going on every weekend. I am saying no more and more but it's starting to get lonely...any tips?

That’s normal! How old are you? Depends on the circle of friends you keep. I would try to find new hobbies, with people you may have more in common with. I’m working through this myself. I’m sure some more seasoned vets can chime in with more insight.

Literally find sober friends. It’s the best way to get away from it. People who have lifestyles like the one you want. Similar hobbies. This is going to sound ridiculous but joining my neighborhoods Fb group got me some brand new awesome local friends who weren’t out partying like my old crew I knew I had out grown!

Thanks for the tips! I unfortunately deleted FB but yeah besides going out it's like...how do you meet people!? I've made some friends at the group fitness studio/yoga studio I go to but maybe I'll have to re-download FB and check out what groups are around me.

I’m 32 with friends ranging 25-35ish, living in Southern California where people grow up later and the nightlife is constant. The thing is though…joining a pottery class and getting super excited about it will just not give me the same release as going dancing with friends and bouncing around town all night hahaha. But I am trying! I am super active and thankfully have met a few people at one of my three gyms I work out at but besides that I’m kind of at a loss of what hobbies could still bring me the release and excitement as going out but aren’t costly or taking away from my work. Work in progress!!

I did not drink for a month a few months ago. I did not really mis it. Unless it was with social events or when celebrating something.

I was on and off sober until this February when I finally decided to quit drinking. For good. Hasn't been easy and sometimes I have small urges to have a drink or two but I know that if I break, I'll go back to having problems.

What helps? Healthy lifestyle (sport, diet, etc.) - then you don't want to lose your results. I also did the math on how much I spend on alcohol + how much I waste money (all the money spent on good lifestyle goes to waste when you keep drinking).

It's also good to ask yourself why you are really drinking (if you abuse it or have some control issues). And dig really deep. For me it was the need to be accepted. I couldn't stand what others thought of me so I got drunk to forget I care. But I guess everyone has his/her reasons and it's a good idea to identify them and look for alternative solutions to that problem.
