Anyone feel like gossiping about Peloton?

None of my colleagues are fellow Peloton-ers, therefor they don't care and won't gossip with me. BUT there's been two big developments in the last couple weeks that I feel like at least one person here will have a take one.

Numero uno: They are now outsourcing production of their bikes and treds and cut even more jobs

Numero dos: During their homecoming event a couple weeks back, they announced that they will be coming out with a Peloton rower. Since that announcement, they have removed every trace of postings on their social accounts and website. Is the Peloton rower no more? Could this be due to the fact that they are now outsourcing production?

Thank you in advance to my fellow WR gossipers

Even basic rowers are expensive AF so I'd imagine it would be a couple thousand

This just in - TONAL is also laying off 35% of their workforce. I'm sensing a theme

Is that the mirror?

TONAL is similar to the mirror but they're a little different. The mirror is owned by Lululemon I believe and is basically just workout videos on a mirror. TONAL is workout videos on a screen that mounts to the wall but also has resistance bands and stuff attached

If they slashed the rower that's crazy, a lot of people were talking about that. It probably does make sense honestly. Theydefinitely took a top class product and team and bet WAY too much on their clout to allow them to do whatever they wanted from there.

I use my Bike+ 3-4 times a week so I am a believer, but I also remind myself that there are such things as healthy market corrections. If they navigate this correctly they can come out much stronger for it and establish themselves as a generational brand instead of that thing people remember that was all the rage 10 years from now.

I was one of those people haha the only reason I stopped rowing is because I got my Peloton. So I was really looking forward to having both again with the rower.

I agree with you! I use my bike multiple times a week and take their strength and cardio classes as well. I'll always be an advocate and recommend it! It makes sense that they saw a lot of growth and success with COVID and I've seen a lot of posts saying that COVID ending & gyms opening was when their downfall came. But, SO many people still have home gyms and there's still a huge market for it. I mean look at NordicTrak, they have all of the equipment available and I don't read about them in the news every other day

if they deleted all the posts they definitely are not doing it anymore due to outsourcing

Sinking ship. Exercise as a service is very niche.

Especially exercise as a service that comes with a high price tag. There's plenty of gym memberships cheaper than the Peloton monthly cost. BUT, there is a great sense of convenience that comes with it that makes it worth it in my opinion

does a rower have the same, status appeal that the bike has/had?? ive always been confused by the rower to be honest haah

I would say it's a bit different in that sense. In my opinion, the bike is definitely more appealable than a rower, which makes sense why it came first. BUT I do also love my rower & think it provides a great workout! Based on their teaser video, it looked like a slick piece of equipment that I'm sure would come with a high price tag. But I'm also sure there would be a long list of Peloton users ready to purchase one if they did release it. I think where they would have trouble is dipping into other users that haven't jumped on the Peloton train yet

Iโ€™m a peloton nerd. 5-6 days a week for 3+ years now. I ordered the tread+ the day before it got recalled and Iโ€™m still waiting for that get released again. Iโ€™d imagine the rower got pushed way, way, out at this point. Itโ€™s a glorious cult.

While the pandemic spiked the popularity of the home workout, it seemed like it was picking up steam before hand anyhow. Expecting the growth to continue with that kind of trajectory post pandemic is foolish at best.

Peloton will be around for a long time because of cult followers like me. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

I didn't hear about the rower, but I know they're pivoting to doing fitness classes for people who don't have the bikes and treadmill. Did you see the Christopher Melony commercial with him exercising "naked" with a straight face. It's funny

Smart move on their part, especially since their equipment is so expensive! Plus, I do enjoy their strength and other classes that don't need the bike or tread. But yess I saw the commercial, funny stuff for sure!

Honestly I hadn't heard of this, but none of it bodes well.

I feel like this was a pandemic fad that's waning. No need to be so damn expensive aside from being a background prop on zoom calls.
