I was the chair of my last company's D&I board. I founded it, alongside several other employees of a diverse background, because we truly thought the industry we were in was chronically underrepresented by anything other than old white dudes. However, once the C-suite got ahold of it, it became a PR circus. We went from 20 interested colleagues to a full sideshow for the company to rally around and claim credit for being the "most diverse" company in our space.
The decision to give Juneteenth off last year was made on June 16th. There was little discussion internally as to the importance of the date, but one exec goes "in following with other companies, we will be taking part in this holiday as well" and proceeds to Slack me all day asking for dashboard updates.
For many companies, I find D&I is an absolute sham. Execs develop it to attract diverse talent but keep hiring the same demographics over and over again. I could go on and on and on about this because I am still sore over the way that my project was hijacked by our Exec team, but I think most companies that participate this year are doing it performatively and not because they have cause or reason to educate their employees on the importance of Juneteenth itself.

what?! well next year you should get it off if you are in the USA. It was just declared a federal holiday on the 17th...my company gave it off to us last year and again this year. They did send out an email educating everyone on Juneteenth which I thought was a step.
