Are companies still drug testing?

My last two jobs have not drug tested me during the pre-employment phase. Are your companies still drug testing?

I'm in Canada, super rare to see companies drug testing. I've really only seen it for roles where driving/operating heavy machinery is a major part of the role, and of course things like law enforcement. I think it's incredibly ridiculous for most roles and even though I haven't touched so much as pot in years, would not work for an employer who was drug testing for an office job.

Other than my last two jobs, all of my previous jobs did require it in the US. Sounds like Canada may be a little more slack on this front. I think as long as you get your job done well, aren't harming others, and aren't in an industry like heavy machinery, what you do in your own time is up to you and shouldn't be on an employers radar.

I agree with you 100%. If you're not intoxicated at work, it isn't affecting your work, and you're not in possession of drugs at work, it's none of the employer's business.

Blow it up
Unless you're high at work, employer drug testing is fucking LAME.

Even in high-risk like heavy machinery or policing, smoking a joint over a weekend doesn't do shit to your ability to work on Monday.

My company doesn't drug test, but about 75% of the clients that we place people at still do.

Well now Healthcare, which makes plenty of sense. Probably 95% of roles require drug screens. Healthcare's obviously an outlier. Also extensive background checks,ย titers/vaccines/boosters,ย employment & education verifications,ย  competence tests, extensive reference checks, other random compliance, etc. Onboarding's a bitch for healthcare.

Was actually more so referring to my previous role in which recruited IT roles, and that was more of the 75% range. Sometimes had to drug test test even people working remotely.

Makes sense re:healthcare. Onboarding for those positions sounds miserable tho lol.

IT... so fucking random and unnecessary. Also I'd say about 80% of IT people are stoners so... Must be rough finding viable candidates lol.ย

Lot of money to be made in Healthcare, but you sacrifice so much time onboarding. I'd pay for an assistant lol.

Right? If I sat in front of a computer coding all day, I'd probably be high all the time too!

If you love paying 40 percent of you monthly salary in taxes. Then it's perfect! Denmark is one of the countryโ€™s in the world with highest taxes! ๐Ÿฅต

However, we have good salaries and many benefits. Free hospitals, educations, you name it.

Being described as some of the best in the world, if you have committed a crime. I work for a telecommunications company at one time, and had many "customers" who called in and needed internet for their cells. It's pretty common.

It's legal to have Playstation, Xbox, TV ect. but no cellphones.ย

I used to be in Pharma Sales and I chugged a few gallons of water before a test. My soon to be manager called and said it was too diluted.......lol. I was a big runner back then so I said I was just trying to stay hydrated. I had to take another one and by then the drugs were gone. Thank the lord!

That's the better question! I've passed by stopping regularly taking drugs a couple of weeks leading up to the test. However, I've still passed drug tests after using Cannabis the day before. I think your metabolism, genetics, and overall usage play a large part in it.

Adding to my own comment - I had a friend get a job to support a federal customer of ours. When he found out they'd test to let him on premise for meetings, he told the manager he wouldn't pass. So they returned him to his previous role and hired someone else.

Not a bad answer but I would cut out the "make money". It isn't a bad answer but it's an obvious answer. A lot of people get into sales because of the money. Hell, I'm in sales for the money BUT a lot of other reasons.

I'm sure everyone has a different story here. As someone who interviews candidates regularly, don't try to base your answer on what you think the interviewer wants to hear. Be honest. Authenticity wins every day (IMO).
