Are we celebrating the wrong thing?

In my experience, all sellers are savages. We work hard (and play hard). Still - it bothers me when I hear someone saying "I worked 60 hours last week" proudly.

I love the autonomy and weird cycles of sales. Some days I'm on the phone 7am-7pm. Some days I'm getting my nails done and meeting the other savages at a brewery. It's hard to explain "work-life" balance when it comes to this job, especially because the extra hours tend to directly correlate on pay checks.

I'm curious - in your experience, do sales teams tend to celebrate working major overtime? And does it bother you?

Should we celebrate extra hours worked?

Work the hours you need to work to achieve the goals you have for yourself. If you're willing to sacrifice personal time for cash, that's fine. If you're willing to sacrifice cash for a better work life balance, that's also fine (as long as you're meeting your company standards.)

What I don't like is companies who pressure or make people feel like slackers for wanting to work a normal work week, without ongoing excessive overtime or working on the weekends.

I try and keep to normal working hours as much as possible. Would I make a call at 6 pm to close a deal? Absolutely. Would I make myself available for anything from 7 am - 7 pm? Answer non-urgent emails on a Saturday? Nope. I focus on being as efficient as possible during working hours. Of course I care about making lots of money - I'm in sales. But I also care about my wellness, hobbies, social life, and having an identity outside my job title. I know this means I probably won't ever be a millionaire, and I'm fine with that.

I have a very similar mentality. It's just interesting to see some leaders who really praise and look for that over-the-top commitment. Another thing to try to gauge when evaluating other roles - how the leader views work hours.

Should celebrate at the golf course when you hit quota in record time
Sales allows you to play while others work if you do it right

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
Exactly. And "Salesninja was always there for friends and family" is a lot better than "man, that guy crushed his quota every quarter" when people look back at what they remember about you.

I may work 50-60 hours in a given week but I stick to a routine as much as possible. That's for me.ย

It can be easy to feel like you need to put in the hours and there's never enough time. Don't fall into that trap. Schedule your days - even the breaks.ย

I leave the office when I'm done or bored. I haven't counted hours in years. Sure there have been very late nights, but I wasn't done and/or I wasn't bored.ย
