Are we in a recession?

Honestly, I don't know what's going on.

I'm off of a lot of social media and don't watch the news so I'm out of a touch.

All I hear is layoffs upon layoffs but companies are posting record profits.

At the same time, job postings are at a year high.

Inflation is top of mind for many and it doesn't seem like buyers are entertaining any conversations.

Companies are focused on selling to the base and outbound prospecting is horrid.

What gives? Is the world ending?

Let’s just change the definition 😅. What used to be recession is now called happy times. So we’re in happy times

I still think it's more of𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞.

Stupid Companies ---> Who couldn't keep it in their pants ---> Announcing employee layoffs

Better Companies ---> Who did keep it in their pants ---> Still continuing to Hire

Laid-off Employees ---> Who were wrong hires ---> Now need to find the right place for themselves

Might have been talking to me. Eh.

Fuller post: Overall rule of thumb - don't get your news from social media. If you want to know what's going on, maybe look at legitimate news sources and read some economic analysts. Some of these layoffs have been due to market corrections, which are inevitable after bubbles, whether they are small or large. Side question: if you're out of touch, where are you hearing all this stuff?

Finally, as someone who was working during the crash of 2001 and again in 2008, this is not even close yet.

i mean yes.....the definition before everyone started fucking with it was negative GDP growth for 2 straight quarters...so yes we are.

it is a crazy recession though, like you mentioned job postings are up, but layoffs are also still crazy it feels like.

GDP is a poor metric. It includes things like engine parts but not engines (which are more valuable as a marker of growth, as they are deployed in items that are sold).

At the very least, I’ve been assuming that’s what my customers and prospects are thinking

Meh, I have seen it a little, but I work in the hospitality vertical where travel is still up and we are doing ok.

Gas price is slowly going down and jobs reports are looking good from the last couple months. Still early, if you go by the "GDP in two successive quarters goes down" yes we are in a recession

Yes, despite the comms team at the White House changing the definition. Regardless of what people say about certain positive stats recently, two consecutive quarters of a contracting economy is a recession. It might not be as sharp of one, or we could have two small ones, but I'd just prepare and plan accordingly.

No. Cyclical slowdown waiting for supply chains/ trade lanes to rebuild.

Job postings are not up, job posting systems just haven't kept up with WFH. If you have a remote job, you still need to post the job in the top 25 metros or no one will see it. One job is getting counted 25 times.
