Are you affected by underperformance due to overthinking things?

I was having a conversation with one of my friends from college and he said that sometimes we underachieve because we tend to overthink (and complicate) certain situations and I was wondering if anyone else feels the same way.

I used to be. I used to be afraid to ask certain questions because I didn’t want to get certain answers that I had fabricated in my head. I write everything down and try to break down situations into the bare minimum facts when I am assessing what to do next, and by taking all emotion out of it I’ve found my decisions (at work anyway) have been quicker and generally more accurate

I used to be bad for this. Not so much anymore. Journaling, meditation, time spent self reflecting are all good habits to get into.

Of course this happens. There was a term “paralysis by analysis” which covers this. You don’t need to overthink, just get the course of action, check for spelling errors and send it out.

I agree with your friend. When you overthink, you end up assuming a lot of things and you start attracting them.

You can do this, but you will grow out of it the longer you are in sales. Remind yourself to think of the facts at hand.

I'm my own worst enemy some days. Once I'm usually in a flow state it kind of goes away though.

For sure. Prospects don't like responding to my emails no matter how personalized they are so I continuously change the contents of my messaging in hopes that my reply rate would increase. I think I just need to stick to the basics.
