Ask for a budget range or a set number?

I’ve heard that it’s best to ask for a range when asking for a potential client’s budget (instead of a set number). Do you recommend this and why?

this is super helpful!
I will ask if there has been established budget, but wont ask for specifics since many times there s no budget at the time to deal starts.

but asking what dollar figures require additional approval and from who is very helpful to make sure you dont hit roadblocks at the end.

If you are replacing a product/service, I ask the current cost/budget. If it is net new, I ask about the approved budget.

Yeah, what’s mentioned above.

Ask for how much they’re currently paying- you’ll get an idea, if trying to replace the service provider.

If not, and if it’s something new, then ask for the budget/range/approvals/timelines - all!

Asking a range is better because you’ll get to play with the numbers. Most customers give out budget after knowing where are you priced at.

If they won't or don't have a number, then a range is next best... however, you have to have one or the other.

Getting a budget number is optimal, but you can always pivot to a ballpark/range if they don't want to give that/don't have that exact number.

Kinda hard to go the other way around. Just ask about the budget they've allocated/currently have for this need.

Just ask “what do you have budgeted for this project?” Just be straight forward.

Here is the cost for this, how well is that aligned with what you have budgeted?
