Asking for a Raise

Coming up on the end of the year, and I started thinking about whether or not to go after a raise for next year. I feel like this year it's going to be a common discussion given where inflation is, and I think many people would be justified in their ask, assuming they're performing. What are some of the best tactics to ensure you see a little bump (specifically talking about base salary) if you decide to go after one? Anyone found success using any particular strategy or talk track?

I think it's a good year to ask for a raise given the hot recruitment market for salespeople right now.

Come prepared with numbers and hard justifications for why you deserve a raise. If you're being paid below market for people with your skillset and experience, show that. If you're being paid at par, be prepared to demonstrate why you deserve more (taken on extra responsibilities, exceeded quota x times etc.) Just saying "competitor pays more" is not going to get you anywhere. Don't bother mentioning inflation either, it's not your employer's fault and it's not their problem.ย

I like keeping it real and saying "Hey boss, over the past year I've accomplished x, y z. From what I've been seeing in our area, reps with similar exp and responsibilities are receiving x salary. I want to open up the conversation and see what can be done to bring my salary closer to that given all the things I've done for the company this year." OR "Hey boss, I think you can agree that over the past year I've gone over and above and accomplished x y z. I'd like to see about a salary increase to better reflect the work I've been putting in compared to when I started/when my salary last went up."

Just keep in mind that some orgs have set salary bands for salespeople and they can't approve raises even if it would be justified until you hit x metrics or receive a title change.ย

Exactly so.ย  ย The set bands for raises can be pretty low, too.ย  Think 3%-6%.ย  However, better to have that than not have that!

True that. The best way to get a substantial raise is to change companies, lol.

It's how I managed it, after years of "this is the best we can do".ย  ย  The other bennies at my previous company were sweet, but it was definitely time to jump.

@funcoupons when are you launching your โ€œlet me help you get a raiseโ€ business? You can zoom in to a sales reps meeting and make the pitch. Obviously you get 20% of the raise amount.

Deepfakes are almost to the point you can make the pitch as them.ย

Mic in the ear so the actual rep can answer any questions on the fly.

But but but Chairman Powell said inflation is transitory...

Lmao what a goon

I've only successfully asked for a raise one time, and in that instance I was the only person in the organization who could do my job. That is some nice leverage to have in a negotiation. At any rate, ask for the raise know your worth King

I like that you put your definition of bump in parenthesis.

Find out if your company is adjusting its pricing for inflation. Not super common but it happens. If this is the case, you've got a great argument for a subsequent increase in pay.ย

that's a great point.ย  I'll look into that for sure.

If you are asking for a bump on base, Be sure to illustrate how you are doing additional โ€œbase payโ€ work- maybe mentoring or helping to build sales tools, being part of special projects, etc. If youโ€™re just doing well sales goal wise, they may argue that your accelerator compensates you already for that!

We're going through the 'Great Resignation'.ย

While it's generally referencing our healthcare workers leaving jobs for obvious reasons - it also means that there are far more job opportunities than job candidates.

Rarely are we faced with a better chance to ask for more money.

I did this (then my company went financially insolvent) but I was about to get a pay rise - I sent an email with figures and my reasonings and received an email of gratitude about how I went around asking and it went into the process of becoming.ย

If you don't ask you don't get! The worst they can do is explain why it won't happen at this very moment.ย
