Asshole prospects - try to take their money, or sign up their competition?

Sometimes when I get an asshole prospect, I try harder to win them because it feels good to take their money. But sometimes I want another different kind of revenge and I want to help their competitors instead. What's your default?

How do you all handle a situation where a prospect has a contract approved and is ready for signature, but one of their family members just passed away? Want to be extremely sensitive to the situation...feel there's never a "right" time to reach out and never want to be salesy...
