Attire on video calls - SaaS Sales

When I was doing Enterprise sales and visiting customers on-site, I always followed the mantra of dressing one step up from your customer (i.e. if they wear a polo and khakis, I wore a long sleeve button down).

Having been in SaaS sales for a bit now, was talking with some colleagues about attire on video calls. I sell to a lot of SaaS startups and generally see my customers in sweatshirts, hats, t-shirts, etc.

Curious to hear thoughts on whether you still follow the approach of dressing one step up, or do you wear t-shirts and/or sweatshirts on video calls? Any data out there you've seen studying this?

We recently had a c-level tried to implement an on-video dress code. Backfired substantially. Made everyone look out of place when trying to talk to clients. As long as you don't look like a raggedy bitch, most clients do not give a shit.

+1 I always tell my team that they need to be comfortable enough to be confident. We wear jeans and a polo to the office normally, and so same applies from home tbh.

Make the room comfortable, dress how they dress. I sell to SaaS salespeople. Here is what I've worn this year when winning a deal.

Golf polo, blue jeans = deal won

Floral button-up, blue jeans = deal won

BYU Half-Zip jacket, black jeans = deal won

Bryce Harper jersey, backwards black cap, black jeans = deal won

Bayern Munich Jersey, blue jeans = deal won

WFH means exactly that.

I have a company polo and button up shirt. I usually rotate those every day, makes choosing my wfh attire pretty easy. Patagonia vest if it's a little cold.
