Avoiding unemployment insurance?

There is a company I know of that originally had about 30-40 SDR.

Over time (maybe about 8 months), the team slowly dwindled down to about 7 SDRs.

One of the major causes of getting rid of people is a 5 day PIP plan for not meeting quota.

Do you think this was put in place to avoid massive layoffs and paying people unemployment?

EDIT: I dont know how unemployment works lol

Another EDIT update lol: now the company is literally down to 2 AE, even the managers got let go....

You can still get unemployment if you are let go.ย

You don't avoid paying people unemployment if you put someone on a PIP and then let them go.

Sounds more like they wanted to cull the herd by a ton because they spent money that they didn't have.ย

In order to make themselves feel better about negatively affecting a lot of lives because of piss poor planning, they put out a PIP that, judging by the number of SDRs that survived it, was just this side of impossible to hit.ย

All of this so they can almost believe themselves when they say they aren't total pieces of trash.

Whenever large numbers of employees are let go the blame needs placed at the feet of the leadership. This was a way of trying to avoid that blame.

I would bet my salary that if every single SDR were able to meet the parameters of the PIP they still would have found another way to justify getting rid of most of them.

You're right actually, the last batch they let go was hitting quota but they just kicked them out like they were garbage to them.ย

Yeah, sounds like toxic leadership incapable of owning up to their irresponsible decisions.

sounds more like poor leadership and over hiring. They realized they couldn't afford the size of team they had so they put in crazy requirements to get rid of everyone that wasn't a top performer.ย

They can't avoid paying the UI.ย  They may avoid paying severance though if you are fired for lack of performance.
