Backchannelling ?

I can see why employers do this, as the referrals an employee serves up is going to be positive. I know it happens, but something about it still feels wrong to me idk. I guess if I owned my own company I'd be ok with it but as a prospective interviewee it would make me nervous. I know, if you got nothing to hide and been great, you got nothing to worry about.

Has a back channel ever hurt your chances at landing a job?

Do you agree with backchannelling?

Since I back channel and talk to someone who previously worked at X company, I can't be upset if they do the same.

I back channel myself. And I wouldn't mind if the company did the same for me. However, my last employer was so large, I'd challenge anybody who tried to actually find someone I even worked with, let alone someone I reported to.

I said no, I think transparency is absolutely key.

I also think that, by nature, there are significant differences between a candidate 'backchanneling' a company versus the other way around.

There's just an inherent imbalance of power IMO.

Kind of like landlord-tenant. Some of the regulations up here can result in 'professional' rental scammers that take advantage of hearings etc. to just never pay rent and avoid eviction for MONTHS. I read a story about a guy who has tenants that aren't paying rent so he can't afford his own rent. Owns property but is living in his car.

But there are a lot more unscrupulous landlords.

Yes. I had a guy tell me he did his own background check on me. I asked him who he spoke with and he wouldn’t tell me.

I look at it as dodging a bullet personally.

It makes for a stronger relationship if it actuallys forms and you get offered the job. It goes both ways.

I backchannel companies and managers, so I suppose I can’t be too picky about them back-channeling me.

Anyone who doesn't backchannel is slacking. You should be backchanneling them and they should be backchanneling you.
