Not a felon but large companies do background checks.
The company I work for now isn't large, and it was required.ย ย It had been so long since I've had to go through this, I have moved (YEARS ago) and cannot find my diploma, and had to request the virtual acknowledgement from my university.ย That was the hardest thing to track down during the pandemic - the school was closed and admins were remote!
The Saas startups and scaleups that I've worked at haven't checked. Several of my coworkers had been arrested before

All the background checks I've done share their results with you via a 3rd party website. So I got the impression they weren't bluffing.

depends on how serious the crime was that comes up in the background check but I don't believe it's a huge deal. you can also proactively bring it up. My company did decide not to move forward with a BDR candidate one time because something came up on their background checkย
I would run a background check.ย I'd also have a hard time hiring a felon that didn't admit it on the application.ย Nothing worse than a lying felon...

A lot of tech companies are not really worried about BG anymore. They know if they were assholes about it they'd loose qualified applicants. Plus the job market is crazy right now and most companies cannot offer to be super picky.ย
