Badmouthing on team calls

I'm currently on paternity leave and haven't even been gone a week yet. My boss got on our team call today and apparently went on a rampage and accused me of "running away from my job" and that "I was unprofessional" several colleagues confirmed this. I really want to go to HR about this because this isn't the first time something like this had happened. Thoughts? Advice?

He’s terrible. I have a whole file but just haven’t used it. Think this is the last straw

Texts/Emails are gold in this scenario. Especially from multiple sources. Good luck, take them for everything the can give, and find a better job.

Congratulations on your new family member.  I'm sorry that you have this facing you, when you should be working for a company and a manager who value your contributions and respect your time off for such a valid reason.  I'm shocked that this is even happening, and that he thinks this is an acceptable way to talk about an employee he manages in front of others.   HR, with proof.

Straight to HR and quickly. Your boss has now created a dynamic where you can’t work for them because you are going to feel like you’re stepping on eggshells and he called you soft. Leverage is a beautiful thing.

Can’t understand how this is even a question. Unless you work for some 1950’s ad agency it sounds like a pretty clear cut scenario.

wow that’s bad. hopefully HR actually does something about this. Texts will help to show proof if it’s from multiple people. Probably a long shot, but maybe someone recorded the call?

Report them and like everyone else said, have the proof to back it up and take him/her to the cleaners.

Sounds like he is already on the radar and probably a PIP as well. I would ride it out, you will probably still be there when he isn't.

Hopefully your org doesn’t take that kind of stuff lightly and he gets reprimanded/let go. Def go to HR, no one should have to put up with that sort of toxicity.

Thanks all for the advice. I did talk to HR and they talked to him and nothing happened. This place is a disaster and I plan on leaving as soon as my leave is up. It’s unbelievable.

Does your boss make sure you get paid? Does he find ways for you to increase comp or volume? If yes, then forget it. Just know that it's mostly a show to get people to not take time off.

However, if he is an ass and just gets in everyone's way, then come up with a plan and try to get him out of the way/take over when you are back.

This is something that happens OFTEN and is NOT OKAY. My boss has done this and had to be set straight, now is very cognizant of what he says regarding people's personal lives- as a boss SHOULD be.

It's up to you if you think you'll be able to confront them yourself or if you need to get HR involved.
