Yesterday I had to leave in the middle of a meeting that was going amazingly. I got a call from my 11yr old son in the middle of a meeting, which I answered, because the time of day was very out of character and I thought something had to be wrong. I was right. My boy was freaking out because he found a young child wondering around the street in our neighborhood and I coached him through what to ask the little boy. His speech impediment made it impossible to understand his name, he didn't know where he lived but he did not want to go home. Not long after, another adult overheard the conversation and came to assist- then the police showed up.
Turns out the boy had been reported missing and the police were out looking for him! When my son found him, the little boy said he was going "to the woods to sleep in the trees".
I walked back in and told the person I was meeting with I had to leave to go get my kid ice cream and walked out of her office right then. We do live close to some woods and I feel very certain that my son saved this boy and his parents, at the minimum, some serious distress. (For the parents reading this who are freaking out- the boy snuck out of his own yard when his grandma was "watching" him. I hate that he didn't want to go home- but I think every 6yr old has threatened to run away at some point- so I'm hopeful he was just feisty yesterday and there are no real concerns about the home)
Hope I still close the deal... but gah-damn if I don't have a new "favorite meeting" story.
