Balance of Personal and Professional Life

I always want to balance my professional and personal lives, but find myself responding to customers late at night and constantly checking my email on the weekend.

Is this just me or is this expected of us as Sales Savages?

Any tips on balancing work with personal life?

Thanks

It took me a long time to find the right balance. If you focus on it, you'll get there.

When some people say "work/life balance" they mean that they don't check their email on the weekends. Others might mean that they limit themselves to checking their email until 8pm. Some others like to save all their weekend work for Sunday night. First, you need to decide what work/life balance means to you.

Once you have decided what your limits are, stick to them. Personally, I put my phone on Do Not Disturb while I'm working out, eating dinner, and watching TV with my family. I check in (slack, email) before I go to bed to make sure there isn't something urgent but I don't respond to everyone right then and there. It can wait most of the time.

Its tough. Unfortunately, its common to have this unwritten expectation.

I am by no means complaining, but I just find myself constantly checking my email at the gym, watching a movie, etc.

Yeah, I think you need to be firm if you’re trying to set those boundaries wether its with yourself or your employer. Depending on how ingrained this expectation is in the work culture, results may vary.

If this is something you’re trying to work out for yourself: Some advice i got from a therapist is to pick at least one time block during your day where you are not checking a screen. Even if it’s just 30 minutes. There are apps to help with this. You can also just set an alarm.

BOUNDARIES!

Seriously set boundaries. Whether it's you are available 24/7 or you set your phone to dnd from 7p-5a, whatever works the best for you.

This is important so you can avoid burn out my friend.
