If my sales cycles werenโ€™t so long Iโ€™d say commission. But because they are, give me the higher guaranteed base.ย

Exactly. This is why typical enterprise roles have a ~2x salary over mid-market.ย

I'd like to see some reliable data on this.ย  I feel like a lot of the stuff Glassdoor etc. put out is just garbage.

Exactly. Also depends on deal volume... if you're closing 2-3 deals to hit quota that means you're only seeing comission a couple times a year.ย

I might only close 2-3 new logos per year, but there's a lot more in between that in the form of add ons and/or contract renewals.ย  But fair point, when you get paid it can be big, but it might not happen often.

i think it's entirely industry based. i'm a loan officer and my sales cycle once a client actually enters into the processing stage, it's 21-30 days by federal regulation time frames - we get no base salary or hourly, i get 1% of every dollar i loan.

Yeah. The earning potential is there, big deals with a good commission structure (and uncapped,) but lean months where you're waiting for shit to close/pay their first invoice suck.

whats your sales cycle? I'm a loan officer and it takes 30 days for deals to close and before they even get into the process, i'm working with buyers for months or even a year before they find a house. For the sake of comparison though, my sales cycle by law is between 21-30 days. What's yours?

If in a transactional environment, absolutely! When I worked in social media solutions my base was about $8/hr and I came very close to 6figures in my first year and certainly would have cleared that in 2020 had we not all been laid off.ย ย

Depends on the opportunity really.ย  In transactional, every dial can turn into a deal.ย ย

Definitely more base is preferred but incentives should have no cap IMO.ย

Gives a sales person much more room to be hungry.ย

The older I get the more I want a comfortable base to live off of. Although you get to a point were you don't "need" more.
Commission is for upleveling your life: investing, saving, splurging, big purchases (house..).

Obvs years ago when my base was shit I saw it differently ๐Ÿ˜…

pshhh bro you just gotta build a pipeline that enables you to have a long sales cycle, but have enough active deals so you have fairly consistent closings. i do mortgages and sometimes i work with buyers for a year or more before they find a pad and get into contract.

Eventually after you โ€œplant enough seedsโ€ so to speak, itโ€™s very consistent with time. But you have to constantly be working on the front end bringing in new deals so it almost doesnโ€™t matter when one deal closes because you have a steady active pipeline that when the slower clients pop, it makes for even bigger months.

It ultimately depends on your OTE, sales cycle and the cost of living. If you are making $180k base, you should be able to have most of the basics coveredย

I'm a commission only employee and if you believe in your product and the commission structure truly allows you to make uncapped money based on your closings, then commission ALL THE WAY.ย
