BDR Manager Career Path

Hello Fellow Sales Savages,

Been spending a lot of time reflecting on how being a BDR Manager fits into a career progression.

For context, i've worked for this company for about 3 years, 1.5 as a BDR for new business, 1 year working client side, and .5 years in the BDR Management role.

After talking to my boss, the career progression she laid out is as follows.

BDR Manager > Senior BDR Manager (1 year high performance) > Associate BDR Manager (3 years & you are running a big portion of the BDR function)

Are there any alternate career paths you have seen BDR managers take in the past? Would genuinely be curious to learn what type of career next step comes from being a BDR manager.

Appreciate any guidance you can provide.

Regards,

-DuckDuckGos

You're probably going to need to move to an AE role for a bit before you can be an AE manager.

Three moves and they are all Manager roles? At some point, you'll be managing managers, which is typically what a Director does.

Do you want to stay in this line of work forever?

@duckduckgosI would start by asking yourself what job you want in 5 years and work backwards to understand what progression track you should take.

Would you be managing BDR managers in the Associate BDR Manager role? Or just a pay pump?

Managing BDR Managers is an awesome career opportunity because it takes you another step further up the totem poll and you need to be focused on a completely different skillsets. This would also be a stepping stone to AE Management, or even eventually managing AE managers.

I don't see a lot of BDR managers, even second line ones, moving to AE management. Most orgs I've seen have them siloed.

From what I've observed. there really aren't any. Other then going to another company and doing it all over again.

Also, curious about the size of your org that they have 3+ levels of BDR management.

I think it's highly relative to whatever company you're with. Maybe they offer training or roadmaps like this, but is it what you want?

Doesn't they give an opportunity for lateral growth that might interest you?

I was a BDR manager and then went to an AE role because of the career path and earning potential. If you never have closing experience it's super hard to move up

I’d study my boss, follow them around, find out some nice dirt or blackmail on them….then when the time is right, unload that to HR and take their job. Boom!

Ive seen bdr managers turn into inside sales managers as well. I think full conversion to vp/managing AEs would require a big jump.

Additionally, I find it helpful on Glassdoor to sort by "most recent" in the reviews and then filter by your job title. Should give you a more relevant look into the company. Hope this helps and good luck.
