Best advice(professional or personal) you have ever received

I love hearing about the advice that people really took to heart and one thing that always sticks with me is "never let the highs get too high or the lows get to low"

Both personal and professional this is probably the best advice I have ever received.

Would love to hear from others.

Life isn't fair.

The sooner you understand that, the happier you'll be. It really wipes away the sense of entitlement that someone can develop and helps to put negative events into perspective. Sometimes good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people. That's just the way it is for everyone.

Have you ever read "The Other Wes Moore"? It's about two people who grow up in the same neighborhood with the same name and how wildly different their lives are due to privilege. I haven't started yet, but have it lined up for my next read!

Be loyal to yourself and people around you, not the company.

Told to a friend of mine from a Boeing exec: Imagine you have a bucket full of water. Now dip your hand in and pull it out really fast. See those ripples? Good. You see how quickly those ripples calmed and went away? That’s about how long it takes a company to move on once you’re gone.

Sales Training & Enablement
When I was in a dead-end job that wasn't working out and was thinking of staring over career-wise, my 80 year old grandfather called me on the phone one night with a story and some advice.

To give you some idea of why I trusted his opinion: he survived cancer (both himself and his wife), grew up during the Depression in rural Georgia with little money, was deployed in the Army in Korea during the Korean War, stood up to intimidation from Klansmen in the Deep South as a plant foreman, and cared for a Downs Syndrome daughter. He had recently just retired from a 3rd career teaching business school classes at night after getting his master's degree late in life.

He told me a story about his son, my uncle, (that I'd never heard before) who kind of had a hard time figuring out what he wanted to do in life. In the late 70's my uncle had left college because he was messing around and pretty much failing. So he decided after that semester to try and work construction.

The first day on the residential job site, the crew was looking to dig a trench to do some light excavation, and the foreman asked him, "Can you drive a backhoe?"

Well, my uncle being an overconfident 20 year old, thinking it better to lie, look good in front of the new boss, and figure it on the spot told him that he could. In the next few moments, he went from "I can do this!" to "Oh, shit!" as he tried to steer the backhoe away from a house. Before he knew it, he had run into the screen porch and partially knocked it down.

The foreman swiftly fired him, my uncle eventually went back to school, and became a VP of a trucking and logistics company. Also, the foreman's son ended up being one of his coworkers (not in the same department --- but they would randomly run into each other at company parties and generally have a good laugh about the story because his dad always told it to anyone new he hired as what NOT to do).

My grandfather wrapped up this story by saying, "There's two things I want you take away from this as you think about switching careers:

1. "Confidence is great, but don't lie about something you can't do. Tell them that you don't know but want to learn. Most folks are willing to teach someone."

I think this is particularly important when interviewing for a new job and getting asked about a skill you may not have but know that you could definitely manage or learn given the opportunity. This could also be if you're looking to move up in your organization or learn more skills.

2. "No job should be permanent. If you don't like what you're doing, figure out how and what you can and want to do. You're never too old to try something new."

After this, I shortly moved into my first startup job in the tech world (coming from an old-school sales career and a teaching career). I think it was definitely good advice and something I've remembered.

90% of people steal their paycheck. All you have to do is be one of the 10% who tries.

[Tech sales] isnt like the sales that your parents or people at the bar think of. What we do is academic, and you need to treat it that way

I got good at cold calling after a coworker told me that her key is not giving a flying fuck about what the person on the other end of the line says/thinks. If they are an ass, move on. If they are super nice and you book a meeting, that doesnt mean you stop.

In regards to cold calling my old CEO once said to me "anyone who matters (in terms of making a decision) works past 5."  I have found calling after hours to higher up prospects has been much more successful than doing it mid-day.

when my son was born, my dad reminded me to make the most of my time with him by saying "you only get 18 birthdays, spring breaks, Christmases, and New Years before he's grown and out of the house. Make the most of every single one.

Sell like you're selling to your own mother.

You know that glazed-over look she gives when you talk about technology. Now know every executive you are selling into is at that same level of knowledge about your product. Now do that in three sentences with a CTA. :)
